I remember those cannot browse errors.. I just kept hitting refresh until something happened or I got bored of it and did something else. I never did find out why 98 does that.

If you're trying to overrite 98 and upgrade that way, I don't think it's possible. The only way to install with 98 already on the system that I've seen is to either dual boot, or erase 98 and install XP fresh. I could be mistaken though.

What are you trying to upgrade? From 9x? Win2k? ME? Share some details and I'm sure you'll get a damn good answer that tells you exactly what you wanna know :)

To make sure the floppy works, at least that's what I'm suggesting. I'm fairly certain that's what Frank was suggesting, but I may be wrong. Either way it may be useful to know.

You should really try removing the HDD and attempting it without it. Just because the MB is new doesn't necessarily mean it isn't bad. Could be a defective board. Or your floppy may have given up the ghost on you during the transfer. It's happened to people before.

That should be correct. That's how it's been in the past. The upgrade was simply the full version, with an added check to make sure you had a previous version of Windows

if you mean System restore date, no, I think you should clean your system and patch it, that should be easier and less of a risk. (I am totaly assuming you're computer has been infected by the msblast.exe) Although you may want to get some more opinions on the matter before deciding what to do...
Start->Settings->Control Panel->Networking->Change windows logon to Client for Microsoft Networks or Novell depending on what you use (most likely Microsoft). Restart. That should do it.

do you have multiple things open, such as dozens of aim windows, 5+ internet explorer windows open, say a search going on? Those will drain window's resources like a hobo suckin on a bottle of booze. Otherwise you may have some specific program that's just taking up everything.

actually on the first login if you don't chose a password and it's set right (or wrong depending on how you view it) the x (which equals cancel) will set it to not ask anymore, it even says that, but it has to be set a certain way.

Yes, patch download the patch (Don't run it from it's location) and then run the patch. I had to do the same exact thing earlier last night, was a painfully slow process with all the random restarts. But once you patch your system it should run fine with no more shutdowns.
