Very strange. I have heard of some problems with SP2 for Office 97, but nothing like that. I only install SP1 now (not as a patch, but as a full product update).

I actually found the answer to my own question.
The problem has to do with a registry entry written by Easy CD Creator (I believe) that persists after the software is uninstalled. Here's a link (Computing.net) to the post that supplied the necessary registry modifications...
