THe CISCO VPN client has a box on the Transport Tab that says "Allow Local LAN Access". Put a check mark in this box and then save it. Exit out and come back in and establish a new connection.

I've used both WINs and DNS, and you just need to make sure that you have an entry on the WINS/DNS server for itself. After that all seems to work well. I do have a site in which the workstation does not log into a Domain. That site only works so well. I would recommend using a domain based network.
