I need help in the shell script, how do we parse the number. FOr example uname -m = 00250215C400, i want to get only C4 out of "00250215C400" what arguments i need to give to get that.
Any one has a script to find out the machine model,CPU speed and architecture.

I hav a sun server but i do not have Tape Drive but i would like to backup my data which is 5GB in size. I am thinking to use tar the 5GB data into chunks of 600MB so that i can ftp the data to my windows machine and cut the CD . Can any one help how to do it ? Is there a better solution ...

I checked that cable with another machine and it works properly. I even removed the card physically and installed again but still the same problem. I also tried to force it 100Mbps network removing autonegotiation on /etc/system but then it does...

I have a Folder (A) with all files and respective names of files are written in a name.text file in a different folder(B).
All users will be using some application which will keep adding files to A and respective files names will be written after certain period (say 2 days) to name.txt...

Thanks for your reply. I am actually taking inventory of huge list of servers so i would like to know the serial number using the command. I can use uname -a for HP similarly i need to find out which command is suitable to find the serial number of the SUN box.

Can any one know how to find out serial number of a SUN machine.
In HP if you give uname -a you get a serial number but in SUN we are not getting that. We may have to use another command...
Pls do the needful ASAP.

How do you find RAM on Red Hat Linux box on Intel machine without restarting the computer.
Like Solaris you can find out using prtconf...do we have any thing like that in Read Hat Linux 7.2
