    Gateway Flex ATX

Dakota is right. The style of the card is called Low Profile. www.directron.com has a "modem and low profile" (?) section on their website too. I scavanged one of those gateway motherboards to put in one of my three IBM netvista low profile flex-atx cases. Talk about a tight fit! I've used...

New homebuilt computer shuts off within 2 min. CPU temp is over 180F.

I'll try to retain this for a few more years. I will not underestimate the staying power of older PC's... as much as I want to. I still have friends just now upgrading from their p166's... Can you imagine trying to do any video editing on that! [hairpull3] (anything pre pIII@733 except the dual...

New homebuilt computer shuts off within 2 min. CPU temp is over 180F.

I'll attempt my retrofit soon. However, also in the spirit of accuracy - I'll have to say "anyone who has ever built more than one socket A machine knows this basic fact!" is also wrong. I've built 2! :P (3 if you count replacing the OEM heatsink on mine, though my heat issue was airflow...

New homebuilt computer shuts off within 2 min. CPU temp is over 180F.

A fine thing. I now have the urge to take my 1800+ heatsink off and see how easy it is.... It may be an excuse to get my p4... And I'll take my star back if you dont want it micker! I was just giving you credit for a helpful & speedy reply. c:\del star.* [surprise]

New homebuilt computer shuts off within 2 min. CPU temp is over 180F.

I've built more than one SocketA and even replaced my heatsink with an aftermarket one.... And I didn't know it was that common, or even possible. It fits one way and won't the other unless forced. (I also usually ignore overheating AMD posts) I guess I've never been forceful enough to "make it...

Since Micker377 immediatly hit it square on the nose - Have a star, since nobody else has given you one. Cheers! [cheers]

    DVD creation

If you have a CD-Recorder, you have the option of saving your project as an uncompressed avi, then converting it with something like TMPGencoder to MPEG2. You then can make something called a CDVD, which uses dvd quality MPEG2 video and acts pretty much the same in a dvd-player, but is played...

    Urgent! Friends Computer Won't Start

Congrats RealAmad, Advise your buddy to blast it out with a can of air every once in a while, and it also helps to keep dust level down if the case is elevated off the floor. I was adding memory to our HVAC contractor's home machine, and it was an older p3-667. I almost gagged when I opened...

    DVD creation

I picked the RT.X100 for it's realtime capture to MPEG2 from analog sources. I'm working at a TV station/ISP/IT dept converting betaSP's to DVD archives in my spare time and need maximum quality with broadcast engineers sniffing my work. Realtime export? I'm aware of it's realtime MPEG2...

    dual head video card

Go to your control panel, and double click display. Click settings. Click on monitor icon #2. Click YES to enable the second display. Check "Extend my windows monitor onto this monitor". Click "apply" And see how that goes. Been years since I've touched NT, so I may be a bit off on where...

    dual head video card

What kind did you get? Geforce or ATI? I'm running a Geforce4 TI4800 dual head to my 19" and 21" monitors. I'm at work currently, so I can't look at my settings, but there is a setting to extend the desktop to the second monitor. Let us know the tpe of card, and we can go from there.

    video card compatible?

I don't see why not either. I have a low-profile IBM netvista notebook as a HTPC downstairs (pIII@@733mhz) and have added both a geforce2 and a geforce4 PCI with no problems.

    Laptop requirements

If buying used, to watch DVD's, mild websurfing and email, then you would probably get away with a p3~650. If using XP, then get as much memory as you can. 256mb should suffice... for now. I have an IBM pII laptop that plays DVD's fine, but hesitate to recommend buying something so old. In...

    Urgent! Friends Computer Won't Start

You can also try pulling all memory and just try using 1 chip at a time in slot 1 to eliminate the possibility of a single stick of bad ram. If that fails, I'd suspect the proc. My AMD1800+ heats up like a pycho on crack as soon as I start to overclock it... Even with the aftermarket all-copper...

    Old NetVista machine

F-secure was a real troublemaker for me and the constant reboot syndrome.
