Debonair,
The last program installed before fitful woe syndrome began was MS Office. I must admit that the copy I installed is a bit 'dodgy' as I live in Thailand and most of the software here is that way.
Problem is I can't uninstall it... It freezes when I try to do so. I'll try to use...
A bit more info...
I'm not at home now so I can't see exactly what they are but from memory they are:
'Cool Internet Options'
'Loxinfo' (the local ISP)
'Carepaq' (basically an ad to promote an extra-cost additional warranty)
And one more that I can't remember...

My relatively new Windows XP system seems to have died a fitful death. What's unusual about this is that it's a very new system (less than a month) and I haven't installed much software on it.

It began about 6 months ago when I suddenly could not send mail. I was doing everything as before, hadn't installed a thing...
Hi Dan,
For what it's worth I'm facing the same problem and I have traced it back to installation of McAfee's Virus Protect. Office 2000 will hang at the splash screen, however if I leave it at that point for a very long time then Outlook 2000 will start and will give me an error message...
