Thanks Linney but these haven't cured it.
I think the problem lies in the process being an "internet connection wizard" has not completed so tries to complete every time you use the browser? If I could disable the wizard then maybe we'd have our answer?

Worked it out!
when recieving an email whilst doing something else, somethimes the PC is fooled into thinking the shift key is held down when it isn't.
If I do a mulitple select holding down the shift key the do a single select a couple of times the PC realises and I can continue.

I am running windows 2000 with 398Mb of ram and 20Gb HD. when opening the recycle bin the OS keeps refreshing every second for about 3 minutes. The recycle bin contains 1,488 objects totaling 218Mb. Why does this refresh keep happening?
