Being a site of your size you should ask CommVault for reference sites. They will happily provide them. Go to those sites and ask detailed questions of them. Have a look at their setups.
I suggest that getting advice here is not the way forward for a site of your size.
No issues at our site. It all does work. I think you probably have some software config issues or, more likely, some hardware config/incompatibility issues. With tricky multi-vendor problems like yours, I've had good success getting all relevant vendors in for a meeting and telling them to work...
It's unclear from your post of you're migrating the CommServer, a Media Agent, or both.
If the CommServer:
* CommVault licensing works around the IP address of your CommServer. If your CommServer is not changing its IP address, you have no problem. Just make sure that the names you're using...
There should be no problem with this. Simpana will backup everything it's told to. Check in the Contents tab what your sub-client is backing up, and check what's being excluded in the Filters tab.
Hi.
I believe there is yes. I've never been a big fan of Windows as a Media Agent (MA), although CommVault provide the most MA support/tweakable options to Win MAs. I understand that you'll get better throughout with just about any other OS as your MA, especially Unix. [A side note - CV...
I echo dutchtreat's comments, especially about the RMAN log. While the job is running, double click it in the job manager window. On the pop-up that opens, click the View RMAN Log button. CommVault's Oracle agent is an interface into RMAN. You need to work out whether the problem is with the...
You don't need a Gridstor license for this! What you do need is faith! Faith that forever running incrementals and combining them with synthetic fulls will produce backups that accurately reflect the state of your remote server!
Here's what you need to do. After that, I'll explain what I mean...
This is very likely to be a connectivity problem. You can get connectivity "ready" but still have connectivity problems - I had this situation yesterday! Some things to check:
1. From the GUI, right click the client and select Properties. Carefully note the Host Name and CommServe HostName...
I would echo Psy053's comments. I've found that full backups with competing products are not a problem, but incrementals are another story.
By default, CommVault uses the Micro$oft Windoze change journal to select files for an incremental/differential backup (am assuming we're talking Windoze...
Thanks for that info guys. BTW, where do you find this info? Books Online? Experience/testing?
As an aside, I couldn't dream up a worse way of organising a manual than Books Online. I don't know what others think but think it's poorly paid out.
OK I'm pretty sure now that it wasn't the Sophos anti-virus product causing the problem. It seems that someone on site has been switching the old backup product on and off - good old BE has been running and I'll bet that it has been clearing the archive bit on files when it's successfully backed...
Addendum: Interestingly, none of the thousands of files on the big disk in question on this server have the archive bit set. We're using the File System agent's default behaviour of using the change journal and not the archive bit, but I still expect to see all files with an "A" next to them...
