4+P parity calculation can avoid read-modify write depending on OS ($+P works very nicely on AIX).
Sometimes our uncached Raid 5 setups write faster than they read!

The fastest you'll ever see out of a gigE link is about 95MB/sec pretty much irrespective of anything else.
Over 2GBit Fibrechannel you may get over 160MB/sec though.

LED888: with respect I disagree with some of your points here.
Point 1. I have no obhjection: TSM's not the easiest thing in the world.
Point 2. it takes two commands to make a TSM DB (or log)bigger (a) define dbvol [or logvol if that's what 's needed], (b) extend db.
It's painless, not...
All it's telling you is that it can't find anything out on the SAN to configure as an AIX device. This is typically due to zoning rules.
If you want rid of the message, define a zoning/lun masking arrangement that lets your AIX system see some devices (whether they be tape or disk or whatever)...
