Sounds like you should be working with layout app ie. Quark or InDesign :P 500 imbedded images in an illustrator file just sounds dirty.. :P

Go to your preferences, under the PDF settings switch your workflow from directly creating PDFs to creating postscript files. Then go File>Export PDF … save your postscript and distill. That’s how I do it anyways

Put your text in like you have done, then use the 'Selection Tool' or the 'Direct Selection Tool', select your path, then put the cursor on the I-bar infront of the first letter, click and drag across the path, it will jump back and forth, inside path, outside path. Cheers.

A quick way of doing it would be to use Kai's Vector Effects which was bought out by Corel (gag) and I think discontinued.. im sure you can find it online. For mac and PC but it never got ported to cocoa for OSX as far as I know :( It was a really handy plugin back in the day before Illustrator...

Version 7, I believe had linking.. Now that I think if it linking was default when placing images in 7 & 8.. been a while since iv used 7. PDF Compatability within an AI files I dont think came in until Illustrator 10.

Sorry, add this in, use stroked shapes. Stroke your solid shape, Set the Mitre Limit as above. Then after you can item>expand... then use pathfinder (Add to shape area) and make it a solid object.. if you need it solid that is.

Use the direct selection tool, pick the point that’s at the end of the flame, then on the stroke settings window, increase your Mitre Limit. Value will depend on your lines and they way they curve, so keep cranking it up until you get what your looking for. Cheers

Link your images instead of imbedding them. On the file viewer when you pick your image check off the link option, and keep it as an AI file until your finished. If you save it as an eps it will imbed the images. If you have a 110MB file of just vectors you got mad points and it most likely...
