Good advice Chris, but the device selection almost has to come after choosing a service provider. To deploy 50 or so stable 7290's on to of a stinky service like Nextel will cause you a great deal of grief. Most devices Rim produces are duplicated to most of the service providers in the cellular...
Yes it will work just as simply as doing a back up from the 957 and a restore to the 7290.... on caveat... the incoming items will overwrite the existing data on the 7290.... meaning any messages he has accumulated since the install will be overwritten with the messages his old device holds up...
To install Bes on a box that has outlook installed will absolutely fail the BES installation. It wont even let you procede with the Bes installation if the Utilty detects outlook.
As far as I have ever known, Distribution lists do not sync down from outlook to a Blackberry, and they dont Sync up from a Device to outlook. Just one peice of functionality the Blackberry does not have.
I would try restarting the Bes server service or evena reboot... it soulds like some network hiccup or issue is preventing the bes from connecting to the mail server which houses his mailbox.
If your user is set up for redirection from the desktop, that is exacly what is supposed to happen. I take you are not running a Bes server? If so and this is still happening, You may need to re-run the Desktop manager installer again on his machine to ensure it is no tset to be redirected from...

on a network that small you should probably just set up a host file manually match the server names to ip addresses and deploy it to the pc's by log in script. I say this because i did not see you mention that you have a dns server or wins server in the house.
