i just tried selecting "none" under the advanced tab. Then I exited out of mail (in the control panel), went back in and tried it again. unfortunately no luck.

Yes, I was able to ping the server. In the meantime I found this solution...
"To resolve this behavior, uninstall and then reinstall TCP/IP from the Windows 2000-based computer."...
which got me past that error but it still won't let me set up the User's mailbox on that workstation...
