It turned out that you have to specify that the server is a PDC during installation of the OS. If you do not then there is no way of changing it from an ordinary server into a DNS. Therefore I simply wiped the H/D's and started from scratch this time specifying it as a PDC.
I know tell me about it, we're already running one server with NT 4.0 and we are trying to mirror it so we can try maintenance work on it and if we mess up it won't effect any of the users, if that makes any sense!
