This happened to me when I set up a new site. It took several days for my web address to get updated so it could be found through my internet service. I would ask your new host if the necessary changes have been made so your web address points to their server. If they have it can take longer...
I've been happy with Icdsoft.com. They are inexpensive and very good with email technical support. They usually answer questions within 15 minutes. Their servers are in Hong Kong, but it doesn't seem to make any difference with the speed of their uploads.
Thanks for the help. Your questions pointed to the obvious answer: the path name includes the direction to the hard drive, which creates too many characters for Dreamweaver to recognize. I saw this in a faq before I posted my question and (duh) I didn't get it.

The root folder is on the hard drive of my ibook.
The ibook is networked with an imac. (although the network is not active at the moment).
