But I couldn't get the file directly from MS...well in a way. I had to provide an e-mail address and they sent me the link and a password for the zip file. All these precautions were because the hotfix isn't officially supported yet. If you use this hotfix on a machine that dosn't have...
Thanks all for the responses.

I checked the event viewer but no problems were reported.
I did some further searching at MS and found a hot fix that addresses my issues. I installed (late last night)and did a disk to disk transfer and was wowed by the rate 87 mb/s +. Much faster than...
My network file transfer's are very slow. I've clean installed Vista Ult32 on my pc updated all drivers and vista sp1. Setup network (wired) to transfer file's to my HTPC...also running vista ult32 all updated (sp1). I'm using only vista firewall and AVGFree 8. Disabled both of these...
I posted this earlier but cannot find it on the site anywhere...so, here it is again! Sorry if this comes up as a duplicate.
I'm looking for a backup/recovery software that can be used independent of the hareware. I'm not using this in a server situation nor over a network, this is just a...
I use to use ghost...way back when...but have used Aconis for the last few years starting with ver. 7. I currently use ver. 10. It does automatic backups weekly and monthly to a spare drive I've installed for just this purpose. I even have a system dvd backup for extreme cases.

While Thermal creep could expalin the initial problems. This doesn't explain why I continued to have the same problems after re-inserting the components and ram.
I still think that there is a problem and it may be intermitent in nature. If so, it will eventually fail outright and then I get to...
I took my ram over to a friends place last night and tested it (Hiren'sBoot Disk) on his machine. It passed all test's. I then used his ram in my machine and was able to boot up into windows. I ran various programs and games without any problems. Both his and my ram are identical.
Just for...
I've had this board and ram for over a year and all the setting, ie: timings and voltages were correct when I installed. The MB is the P5N ASUS which supports 1066 ram (which is 1066 also) but I could only get a stable system, when new, by setting the the ram to 800. This is where I've left it...
Thanks all
I couldn't try any tests as the pc now will only boot periodically and then for a few seconds. I don't overclock and I didn't play with the ram settings. I mainly use "auto" in the bios and check everything is correctly set.
I'm leaning more to the motherboard as I don't get any...

I'm running Vista ultimate and just installed Office 2K3. I tried to import messages from an old Outlook Express 6 mail store but it won't complete. Some meassage pops up in behind the window where I direct it to find the store but it goes away immediately...no chance of seeing or capturing it...
Sorry for taking so long in getting back. I was able to get rid of it after finding a .dll file call, using HJT. I was able to remove the tray icon.
System is, or was clean, after I gave it back...can't say what they've done since then ;)
Thanks for the links and info.
Cheers
Oops...sorry I re-read the pop-up and it said "Spylocked" not 'Spyblocker'! Anyway I found the offending .dll file in the system32 directory, renamed and rebooted. No system tray icon. I'm re-running Hitmanpro to cleanup the leftovers!
Cheers
Hitmanpro runs Spybot, adaware, SpywareBlaster, Webroot, Spywaredoctor, Ewido and some other little apps. None could rid the pc of the problem. As I said it remains in the systray even in safemode (WinXP) and makes it a tuff little SOB to get rid of!
Cheers
