Thanks DrBob,
It just seemed back in the dusty corners of my mind there was a 'better' way for performance or some other reason. Glad to hear it's not a vital issue. Maybe more of a personal preference with some logic thrown in.
Thanks again
I've been away from computers for several years and have gotten very rusty. I'm trying to remember about setting up hard drives and dvd drives.
When you have 2 hard drives and one dvd drive, what's the best setup as far as primary and secondary? One hard drive would be the boot drive (C:)...
Thanks. Wish there had been a secret stash. I did the search at the C prompt with "dir *.jpg /s" so found some jpgs but they were images for wallpaper, etc. None in the users home directory. Didn't find any mp3s anywhere.
I appreciate the reply. Looks like we'll try a total reinstall to...
I'm trying to help a friend of a friend whose laptop won't boot to Windows. It has Vista Home Basic as the OS which I've never used. My question is.. does Vista have any different features that would save the users jpgs or mp3s to some place other than the C drive? (The drive is not...
Thank you. We did try changing Quiet Mode from the default of 'off' to 'on'. No luck. I even tried turning that feature back to 'off' then to 'on' again. I couldn't tell one bit of difference in the amount of noise the printer made, including the beep. We're going to try exchanging the...
We just got a new Lexmark E460dn. All's fine except that is has a loud, 5 second beep every time a print job finishes. This printer will be used mostly for very frequent 1 to 3 page print jobs, not large docs, so a beep after every print would be very frequent and very annoying. I called tech...
Found it. Windows Audio. Wonder if it could have been anymore obvious? :) Now the wav files and MP3s work! Thanks.
I do wonder why so many services are turned off. The start of this thread was about Device Manager being blank. To fix I had to turn the Plug & Play service on. Now I had...
Am trying to check the Services.MSC to make sure the audio is started. I'm not seeing a service for audio. Can you tell me what it's called? I'm sure it's listed and I'm just not figuring out which one it is
Thank you!
No, Mute's not on but thanks for mentioning it. Here's what I know so far
In Control Panel > Sounds where you can preview the sounds for events I can select a sound (like Windows XP Startup.wav) but the arrow to play the sound is grayed out.
I try to play a MP3 file and get the message...
A friend has a problem with his computer shutting off at random times. In beginning to troubleshoot it I found the Device Manager is totally blank.... even in Safe Mode. Has anyone here had this happen before?
Thanks in advance for any advice

Thank you all for your info. I think I'll take the plunge! Good idea about checking locally, Tony. I'll call around instead of just automatically ordering online.

I'm wanting to buy a new laptop. So far have looked at Dell, HP and now IBM. I can get a system I'd like for almost HALF the cost if I go with Lenovo (Thinkpad T61). Seems too good to be true. Anyone have any advice about Lenovo in general? I can post the specs of the system if that would...
