Back again. I appreciated the NewEgg list from Vacunita and jlockley's Fry's suggestion. I actually went by Fry's with this whole deal and they gave me a list of parts - a "kit", if you will - which included a fee for screwing it all together (pretty cheap I thought < $100 IIRC). I'm thinking...
Well, doing a fresh OS install is a pretty obvious way to get rid of all the crap, I guess. Even I can do that. But I didn't realize some programs will even survive that - I've noticed that the The Brit bike AV is particularly tenacious. Good advice on having the drivers handy. Thanks.
I'm back after a few days away from computers. I genuinely appreciate all the suggestions. Thanks to the education you all have provided, I'm confident I can get everything I want (and probably some stuff I don't even need) for my budget. I would probably be more willing to buy something off...
In response to those that suggest I buy something off-the-shelf from Dell, I would say that my experience with Dell over the years has been less than satisfactory - we've had at least three of them here in the office and my wife bought one for the house. They've always been slow (maybe I bought...
Here is some fine tuning:
- Intel CPU near top of the line (i7?) - last CPU was AMD which worked fine; so no
particular bias against AMD; Don't mind saving some money if my needs are such
that I wouldn't notice a downgrade
- A well cooled case; otherwise nothing fancy (bad design on last...
It's been 5 years so it's time for a new custom built desktop pc. I'd like component recommendations for a first class desktop business computer - spreadsheets, word processing, 2d cad and heavy internet browsing, no gaming. Budget is +/- $1,200 not including keyboard, mouse, or screen. What...
I may be doing something wrong, but that link doesn't work. Also, when I go to IBM's support for Lotus there are no downloads for 123. Anyone know anything about that?

Problem is solved. Just go to Control Panel, then go to Regional settings and make the appropriate adjustments. I was also told one must reboot to make the changes effective.

I fought off a nasty virus recently and now all my programs are defaulting to the metric system - Page setup defaults are all European paper sizes, measurements are all in mm, etc. I suspect XP can be reset, but I can't figure out how. Can someone help?

toolman,
One more question: How can I tell if I have Rel 5 or Rel 5.01 and does it make any difference? Are there improvements from 5 to 5.01 significant enough to make it worth upgrading?

toolman,
Well, that worked - or at least I found the SN.DAT file and copied it over so I have the same files on my cd that you do. Tonight, I'll see if it will install.
Thanks.

Hmmmm. None of my floppies have the file SN.DAT included on your list so it doesn't copy over to the hard drive. Also, when I try to install from the CD there is a message relating to the serial number - I can't remember exactly what the message is. I can install any number of times on any...
Hmmm. That didn't work after all. It appears to work, copies the files from the CD over to the hard disk but then when I try to open 123 I get a message that it can't find the initialization file and instructs me to run install which I can't. I can install just fine from the floppies however...
Yeehaw! That worked great. Thanks so much. Now I don't have to worry that my next computer won't even have a floppy drive or, worse, that one of my Lotus floppies won't work next time.
