Great, thank you. He's actually running NIS 2000 and I can't find instructions at symantec as to how to configure for that (although, it's strange-- his firewall wasn't a problem for my old computer on the network), so I think I'll just install NIS 2002 or 03 on his computer instead.

You are a genius! His computer is running Norton Internet Security, and when I disabled it, I was able to access his shared files via the network. Excellent. Now I just need to figure out how the hell to configure his NIS to let my computer in!
