Does the "Log on to:" field (may need to click on Options >>) have the domain name still in it? If so, change it to the %COMPUTERNAME% (this computer) option and you can log in with a local user account.
You can then join the computer to the domain again. HTH

1 uninstall everything Novel from Network connection properties
2 running a batch file with /u switches on setupw2k.exe
3 unchecking Novell components 1 at a time under Network connections

I had this on two user machines and found that deleting their roaming profile (and of course building a new one on login) and a full system restart fixed the problem.
From that point on the problem did not occur again...
