An Update ... Thanks for your suggestion ... I had checked that all the drivers were up-to-date, ... however I had not checked that the network card itself was. It turns out that the xp box had an Intel Pro 1000 T server adapter card, which (according to the Intel site) is now a 'legacy'...- andrewjgray

Another Twist ... On a related matter - could anyone help me with this. I'll say up-front that I dont know very much about the subtleties of networking ! I have a small network of computers Win2K & Win2K server with a single WinXP(sp2) machine - (these all have intel Gigabit network cards)...- andrewjgray
