Shot in the dark but we had a problem with Outlook opening mail slowly. In tools, options, other - there is an option called Instant Messaging. Check to make sure that is not selected. Cured our problem of slow opening mail.

I have found that you need to do the following: Click tools/options/other Remove the tick from the Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook. Hope it works.
