now is there something simple to do on the Server side so people with local or domain accounts can log in?
are there any things I should be aware of..

ok.. here's what I got. a DSL connection, a Linksys DSL router BEFSR41, and a Windows 2000 Server behind it.
Me? a laptop with Windows 2000 Pro.
DHCP is provided by the Linksys router.

All I want to to is connect to the W2K server from any location using the VPN...
Try Hard coding your WINS address in your TCP/IP settings...
if you don't know what it is... when you are at work, open a DOS window and type IPCONFIG and you should see it there in the text.. [ IPCONFIG | MORE <- to pause the screen]or ask your system administrator
