Yes.Applets can very much read and write from the database.As far as resourses are concerned I dont know any web resourses.But writing such a code is not too difficult.You can refer any J2EE book and do it.

You can use http post for passing parameters and pass through the firewall.Ofcourse this is possible in servlets.I dont know about CGI scripts,but a similer ieda may be used.
