I recently setup a Clariion 10-Slot C1000 Array using a hyper terminal session.  i used 4 disks to run a 3-disk RAID5 array and 1 disk as a hot spare.  SPA is set to SCSI ID0 and SPB is set to SCSI ID1 using dip switches on the back of the unit.  i can't get the disks to be recognized by the server(s).  i'm using Adaptec 2944 LVD SCSI adapters with LUN enabled on all ID's.  i'd like 2 servers to be able to see the box eventually, but i can't even get 1 to see it.

i even have the manual for this array, but it only mentions some EISA SCSI card and doesn't go into detail about configuring it.  i really like this array as it can run RAID in a clustered setup.

when i connect one server to the array i connect to SPA-in and then terminate SPA-out.  when i connect both servers to the array i connect the first server to SPA-in, SPA-out to SPB-in, and SPB-out to the second server.

any ideas?
am i going about this all wrong?

You don't say what kind of server and os you are attaching.
You should double check that you're using diff terminators and check that the cable's pins aren't bent or pushed in. If the disks are setup properly, you should see an 'ena' status when you're connected to the serial port and looking at the 'presentation' screen.

I have Data General AV3700 servers with 4x 500Mhz XEON Processors.  I have two of the C1000 arrays and 1 C2000 array, but am only trying to set up a test environment with the C1000.  I've tried connecting the server and servers to the array with Adaptec 2944 & 2940 SCSI adapters.

Should LUN be enabled on the adapters?  if i disable it, it just hangs when scanning the bus after pressing CTRL+A.  if i enable LUN, it scans fine but doesn't report anything under ID0 and/or ID1 -- is this normal?  i have NetWare 6.5 on both servers, i run a NetWare only shop.  the ultimate goal will be to use NCS (novell cluster services) with the array to provide data reliability.

I had no problem setting this up with the CSS4, but it's just a dumb canister.  I would really like to utilize the C1000 for even more redundancy in the cluster.

The disks are setup properly, i do see 'ena' status when i'm connected through hyperterminal.  i understand that part completely as i have the manual and it's very specific about using the presentation utility.

The terminator i use when only connecting one server up to SPA doesn't have any bent pins.  When i connect both servers, i don't use any terminators (maybe i should? - look at my previous post for connection specs).  The cables i'm using are brand new from HP (C5667-61001) 1.5M 68pinHD to 68pinHD thmbscrw external cable.

I'll start by saying that I'm not a Netware guru.
Here's what I can tell you:
You need to terminate in either configuration using a differential terminator.
2944UW differential adaptec controller is what you should be using.
Clariion's default setting is 'lun mode'.  It needs to be 'target mode' for Netware. You need to be in FE mode to change  (or even see ) the setting on the SP.
Multi lun support should be enabled on the adapter.

As to what you should see:  If host bios is enabled on the adaptec, you should see the sp id come up as a disk. No luns will display.  If host bios is disabled (as it should be if your not booting from that controller) you'll see nothing.

I doubt this forum is read much anymore.  If you'd like a better answer (perhaps from someone more Netware aware than I am) post your queston in the EMC Disk / Raid forum at this link: http://www.tek-tips.com/threadminder.cfm?pid=511
Good luck!

netware or not, i currently can't see the drives in the Adaptec SCSI Select Utility (CTRL+A) on power-on boot. i'll make sure i'm using the 2944UW version, i may have a plain old 2944--i'm not sure.

i do have differential terminators, but when using with 2 servers i don't think a terminator is even necessary.  that is, if SPA-out connects to SPB-in, (i'm not sure of this but it looks like what the manual specifies) instead of connecting server1 to SPA-in, SPA-out terminated, server2 to SPB-in, SPB-out terminated--because both 2944 adapters can provide termination for the bus.  for troubleshooting, i've tried hooking up just one server (Server1 to SPA-in, SPA-out terminated) with no luck.

you mention Clariion's default setting is 'lun mode', where is this configured?  in the presentation utility? i will try find this yet tonight.  FE mode?  i'm confused.  i am definitely not a clariion/emc guru.

i have plain 2940 adapters and 1 2940UW and 1 2944UW, so i tried the 2944UW and it worked!! sweet!! but, the 2940UW doesn't--does that sound right?  what's the difference between the 2940UW and the 2944UW?  i know i should use the same model when connecting two servers, so i will buy another 2944UW, but i'm just curious.

thanks for your help!

2940 is for SE SCSI configurations.
2944 is for DIFF SCSI.  Clariion is DIFF only.
The Adaptec ctrl-a option should show you the sp scsi id's only. No luns.  If you don't see them there, there is a config problem.
Your two-server configuration is correct.  No need for a terminator when you hae termination on each end of the bus.

Glad I was able to help.  If Netware has difficulty seeing the luns, drop me a line at fachlich@msn.com and we can discuss how to change sp target/lun mode.

i didn't have much time to dink around with the Clariion array last night.  today i can see that DGC RAID 5 shows up in the adaptec scsi select utility and it also shows DGC RAID 5  when i do a 'LIST DEVICES' under netware using the aha2940.ham driver.  in NSSMU (novell's partition/disk/volume manager) it will not allow me to create or do anything with the device.  i'm guessing i may need to change that SP mode you mentioned, how is that accomplished?

FYI, i tried enabling 'multi lun support' in the adaptec scsi select utility and it only listed DGC -- it didn't list the RAID 5, so i disabled that feature.  i don't know if that was right or wrong.  my plate is full & i have a very limited amount of time to mess around with this setup, so i appreciate any information you can dump on me.
