I am hoping someone can help me. Currently we have E2K at our office but I was reading that E2K3, has built in mobile capability to send emails to cell phones (like blackberry). My questions is this: What else do i need to make it work? I know a phone with windows mobile 2003 is required but do i need to install anything else on the phone or the E2K3 server? If anyone knows any info or if you are using this feature please let me know. thank you.

Exchange connectivity with wireless phones

i recently took an exchange course. In theory it sounded real simple. But we ran into many problems and never really got it working.
It seemed that if OWA was using SSL wireless connectivity would not work.

I do not think we would use OWA. Do you know if it needed any third party apps to work? or will it work straight out of the box for wireless? There are a few phones coming out (like the MPx220) that has over-the-air sync and i would like to know if those types of phones would work with E2K3. Right now we are using a third party app on treo 600's and it is very limited as to what it can do. With the MPx220 it uses Windows Mobile 2003 and that is what we really need since it acts more like the windows O/S. thank you for your information.
If anyone else knows of any places that has more info on the E2K3 wireless features please let me know. I have been checking out the microsoft site but it only tells me it is capble and not what is needed for it to work or what phones work with the exchange server. thanks all for you help.

Check out we have been using it for quite a while now. SSL depends upon phone support.

I mentioned Blackberry just as a refernce. We currently have software from another company that syncs our Treo 600's with our email. but to do this we had to add another server with the software. The software keeps in contact with the exchange users inboxes and then sends any new messages to the device syncing them in real time. So whatever i have in my outlook i also have on my Treo 600. However, from what I have heard about Exchange 2003 it should be able to do this automatically without the need for additional software or servers with phones using the windows mobile 2003. I just want to check to make sure that it works like i think or if i need to add any sort of services to the phone (besides data) or to Exchange 2003. Is it plug and play or do i need to do a whole mess of stuff to get a phone to work with it?

I would like to know how Exchange 2003 send the emails and other items to the phone? Like if i use AT&T wireless how does Exchange 2003 know where to send the messages? Do i just put in a number or some other codes?

I have one user in house here with a treo (the rest are blackberries and Verizon). The treo mail offers POP3 service. You can setup POP3 access natively inside of exchange (obviously), but this would not push the message to the phone. They would only know they received messages once they actively opened up the treo mail client.
OMA, which works on most devices is viewable on their phones, but requires minutes for use since it counts as browsing. There is no push involved here either, like the above method, they would have to actively look for new mail. The advantage to OMA is that they are accessing their Exchange mailboxes directly, so any read messeages, deleted or composed messages would be reflected in their outlook client.
It is possible to forward messages to the phone, but this would not be mailbox management, because it would just send a copy of the message to the email address associated with the phone. This is what we are currently doing with our blackberry users. They get a notification everytime a message hits there inbox, but it is not read or deleted from their exchange account once accessed on their phone.

We need a solution that will push email as soon as it gets to the inbox to the phone. The current software we are using does exactly what we want, however with a smartphone i think we would get more options. We also think our current software causes connectivity issues. soemtimes we will lose connection and not know it. the light still blinks green but we can not dial accept or receive emails. We were hoping that the exchange solution would be better.
Just use the ActiveSync feature with your WM2003 device to synchronize your email(s). It has a 'schedule' that you can configure. Your emails are only up-to-date as to your last 'synchronization'. You shouldn't need to install anything else on the cellphone or E2K3 server.
Once important note: It is highly recommended that you have a FE/BE server configuration though. Otherwise, it's just a headache trying to get ease-of-use, uptime, security, etc. to work.
If you don't have the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange, you can still use the BlackBerry Desktop Software. This requires that the user have Outlook open on their desktop though.
