I am trying to find someone in the Netherlands who supports or upgrades the software on Octel 250i's. The software release is S1.1.1-2. 1996 vintage. Can it be upgraded to Serenade 4.1.1? (what are the benefits)I see it is possible to down load this from the Avaya website. I have tried to contact them about support but have had no response. Does anyone know if this system can support Dutch voice prompts. I have been told it can only take one language? What is the best way to back up the configuration / entire system? What can be done if the harddisk fails in the Octel 250i?

Any suggestions? I think I have the administrative logon.(from what I have seen on this site.) I have the documentation.

Hi meltitdown

I guess that your Octel 250i is connected to an MD110 PBX.
Ericsson sold the 250i included the the MD110 Consono stackable.

I have upgraded with success quite a few of Octel 200/250i from the software release S1.1.1-2 (or lower) to S.2.02-2.

Upgrading from S1 to S2 needs some software disks and of course prompt disks in your native language.

Up to 4 languages can be installed on an Octel 200/250i/300,
if the s/w level is S1.1.1-2, or higher.
You need a license for the languages.

Upgrading from the software release S1.1.1-2 to S.2.02-2:
You will also need some RAM to upgrade the processor board from a CPU12 to CPU16. The VCU should be OK.
So, to the s/w level S.2.0.2-2 there should be no problem.
The s/w level S.3 should also not give any problems..

But with the Serenade 4.1.1, i will have to read more about before I can tell you.

If you could provide me with the list of features, I can tell you more.
This is done in the @-prompt, just write L F.

In general we have not upgraded many Octels from S1 and up, because the customers have been happy with their actual system, but tell me your reasons...

Best regards from the doktor

Hi again

To do the upgrade you will need the maintenace password.
Checking, if you have the maintenace password, just type PS
at the @-prompt. If it says no acccess (or command not allowed), the your password is the administrative one.

To do the back-up, I can give you some hints, if you want.
Backing up all the customer data, as mailboxes etc, you just need a new 3.5" floppy diskette.
The diskette needs to be Octel formatted. I will write the command to you, if you want it.

Thanks very much for your help.

The company who owns the system would like Dutch and English. We had been told it's not possible to have both.

The command PS returns "command not allowed".

I have sopies of the update program back up. ie when you exit from update it asks if you would like to save the configuration. Is that what you mean?

I have a problem with the modem as well. The modem answers but will not connect. Since the system was restarted a few months ago.

If the system can be updated to include Dutch I think that would be enough. I have no idea where to get the prompts for that or the licenses.

Hi meltitdown

It is a bit sad that you do not have the MAINT password.
It is needed to upgrade the software and to install the dutch prompts.
However, you can't even "Octel"-format new 3.5" diskettes, as it demands access to the "SUBMIT" command.
From the L F i can see that it is a quite big system with 1098 users and 16 analogue ports.

If you had the MAINT password (or can get hold of it) I use a command "DEX 1" (at the @-prompt) every 3 month to control the harddisk for bad sectors/clusters.
Your system has only one harddisk, so take care of that.

If you call in to the system on its main group number and hear the Company Greeting, you press ###5 to start up the modem, as you might know.
Having problems with the modem, check for proper grounding to the PBX.(A good thick cable, is preferred!!).
Also use ferite cores on the cables to the MD110 /PBX.

If you log-on locally by means of V24/RS232, make shure that the text MODEM ENABLED is seen just after log-on.
If this is NOT seen, the type "MOD ENABLE" at the @-prompt.
The modem is a part of the CPU-12 main processor board.

But as long as you do not have the MAINT password, I can not help further.

Best regards from the doktor.

Hi again

I forgot one thing.

To check the condition of these Octel systems, watch the alarmlogg from time to time.
The command is L H at the @ prompt.
Reset the alarmlogg by C H at the @ prompt.

I can help interpret the alarmlogg.

Tell me if you want more info on maintenance.

Best regards from the doktor.

Hi Doktor

Thanks for your reply... I have found another password which allows the PS command. I have used DEX before but was not sure about the intreptation. I guess all 0's is good?

Hi Doktor

The Modem is enabled...but the problem I have is it doesn't answer. If I dial ###5 nothing happens. It always used to work by dialing PILOT NUMBER,#####5 and it would answer. So if the modem is internal and it's activated is there anything else I can check or restart? The system was powered off a while ago and since then it doesn't work.

Hello meltitdown

You can clear the alarm logg by using the C H command at the @-prompt.
The @L H show a lot of RS-232 data packets lost or arrived too late or too early.
The DEX 1 looks good. As long as you have zero'es in all your regions of the harddisks it is OK.
The @PS show that all lines are idle.

Going back to the L H:
All the systems we maintain does no not have as many faults in the L H as this system.
Please clear the alarm logg with C H and observe it.
If the problem still is present with the L H, write again.

Concerning the build-in modem.
Please check the system parameter: 233 and set it to NO.
223 NO DISABLE ###5 ACCESS TO THE MODEM
You will have to go to Update first...
Dialling in on the main number for the voice mail and press
###5 (i.e. ATDXXXXXXXX,,,,,,###5) and the modem tone is heard.

Concerning diskettes:
If you want to make you own "OCTEL-formatted" back-up disks use this procedure:
SUBMIT H:CRECFG
from the @-prompt. Use a new diskette of high quality.
Do not use the OCTEL original diskette as it will formatted.

Best regards from the doktor.

Hi Doktor

Thanks for the advice. The system parameter 223 is set correctly. Even so, the modem doesn't answer. Anyway, I will keep trying some different things.

Hi again

As I was a bit worried about all these TYPE 24 alarms in alarm logg, I will give you the opportunity to send med the
log file for yor system.
If you log on and go to update. Then at the point (.) prompt
write: L ALL
You will obatin a logfile for the whole system.
Remove customer name an so and send the log file to this mail address: savedmessage@hotmail.com
When you have done so (if you want), I will ask you for some printouts from the MD110.
There must be some setting in the MD110 and in the OCTEL that must match. Other wise you get these TYPE=24 alarms.
Have a nice weekend.

Best regards from doktor

Hi again....

I think a RESTA helped us once we had a similiar problem with the build-in modem. The modem i s placed on the CPU12 board.
RESTA restarts the whole system.
RESTA is done from the @-prompt.

Best regards from doktor

a RESTA did the trick! Thanks. The system was restarted a while ago but I don't think it was done properly. I think it was just switched off and back on again.

Good job.

Send me an e-mail or write here again if more help is needed with the faults in the alarm logg.

Best regards from the doktor.
