How to Setup HP4200n Printer on Network ?

Hi,

I am completely new in settting up the printers on network.

We had recently got a new HP LaserJet printer.

"HP4200N LaserJet Printer (Black & White)"

I wanted to set this printer on network ,so everyone can print on to it. This printer has a RJ45 port.

We have a windows 2000 server (domain controller,DHCP,proxy server).  All the workstations are Windows XP Professionals.

I had pulled up a cable (CAT 5) from our hub to this Printer RJ45 port. On the printer i went into the setup screen and gave a

    HOSTNAME  :  HP4200
    IPADDRESS :  192.168.1.300  (static)

Now from the workstations (XP Professional) to connect to this printer, I am going to

Add Printer Wizard =>Network Printer=>Connect to printer
                                       using URL

and i am typing http://192.168.1.300, once it finds the printer , i am loading the printer drivers for windows XP from the HP Drivers cdrom.

The problem what i am facing is sometimes this printer looses the network connections.
            OR
The workstations cannot print to this printer.

When i check the printer status on the workstations it shows up as "Opening" or "access denied" "cannot connect".

Usually this is how i am fixing :

1) Delete the printer and set it up again.
2) Switch off & On the printer.

Its becoming a pain, this happens every  4-5 days.

Why is this happening ?
Am I missing something ?

Any help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

---Thanks
   Cathy

first, rather than manual build, try using hp printer install wizard found at http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Produc.... Also, need to verify that cable/termination good. Will need tester for that.  Only other time I have had that prob with this printer is in profile restrictions. Doubt that is your prob as you seem to indicate prob is global.

Also, typically you want to create a queue on your file/print server (aka your windows 2000 server).   Add the printer there, and share it.  Now add it to each workstation by starting the wizard, and add a network printer.  Browse to the share, then specify a driver, then done.  Now the server communicates with the device (which a file server is always tuned and geared towards talking to clients and printers), and not your workstations...

Matt J.

P.S. Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem.  Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.
