Using xp and nwadmin32 on an unpatched 4.11

setting up a 4.11 server. I set it up off the cd without patching it or using service packs so i guess it is pretty old. nwadmin32 seems to work fine in windows 98 client but when I use xp it gives the following message

"An error occurred during an attempt to build the list of subordinate objects."

Only the root is shown in nwadmin (pic of earth) no other objects are shown. When trying to create an object it reports

"Cannot make an object in this context."

Is this to do with service packs for the server? What does netware call these service packs or updates?

Service packs can't hurt. Where are you running NWadmin from? On the XP PC, I believe you should be running it from the Public/Win32 directory, not the Public/W95 directory.

I would install the service pack. I believe the last service pack to 4.11 is service pack 9. Install service pack 9 after your installation. You'll then have the latest Netware Directory Services (NDS) version. You need to run the netware administrator from:

F:\Public\Win32\Nwadmn32.exe

hi thanks for replying.

I service packed the server but no luck. I was using nwadmin32 as you suggested.

another forum suggestted I use console one or run winadmin32 locally. I asked for more details. One person said they had the same problem and used console one.

I set up a windows 2000 machine but had the same problem.

Any more help would be appreciated

It's happening because it's not accessing NDS correctly. Several questions I have for you....

Do you have more than one tree at your location?
Are you running NWADMIN32 from a mapped drive?
Are you running NWADMN32 from the server you're having problems with or a different server?
What client do you have and do you have IPX installed properly?
Is it safe to say you have the Novell client installed, and not Microsofts client for Novell?

In Nwadmn32, if you go to VIEW ==> SET CONTEXT, can you see the tree from the browse button? Select it, and then can you browse to the various contexts?

Kinda hard to say without more details.
