Clearing a cisco 4000 router
|
|
I have a Cisco 4000 router I want to sell, but I need a way to wipe out any of the private config info on it. I would like to do this with out consoling in. Is there a hardware way of doing this? |

redlair2000, The config file for the router is stored in the routers NVRAM. I think the NVRAM is battery backed, so you could try locating its battery source and see if its able to be disconnected. Removing the battery backup may clear the NVRAM contents.
I'm not sure why you want to do it the hardware method. Cisco say that NVRAM can not be upgraded for the c4000 series, so I would hesistate on touching the components should you render a good router inoperable. Erasing the config via the console is the best and quickest way. What you're trying to do is equivalent to erasing the data on a hard-drive without formatting it, rather trying to clear the data off using the electrostatic force from a magnet.

Hi
Clear the config with the 'write erase' command. You can do this via telnet (if you are very sure you no longer need the router). However as you have to physically remove the router from its current location before selling it, why not do this from the console at the same time?
