The console.log is a log file of all server console text that scolls by. It is created by conlog.nlm Please give a better description of what the server is doing when it closes down. You would get the error message "Error writing console.log" because the SYS volume dismounted. Not sure why your getting "because the file size was exceeded", the file should recycle it's self. Check space on your SYS volume, do a purge on the sys volume. Check the SYS:SYSTEM directory for an ABEND.LOG file, post only the first 50 lines. What programs are running on the server when you execute your backup? What backup software do you use? What version is your backup software? What patch level is your backup software? What patch level is your NetWare 4.11? What version is your DS.NLM? =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Brent Schmidt Certified nut case CNE Network+ Experience Senior Network Engineer Keep IT Simple - Bay Area, CA
Checked the abend.log and there was nothing new in it. Checked the sys$log.err and the following messages appeared: Number of unclaimed FAT blocks that were freed 53 Problem with file Q OOFF.SRV (TTS file..not changed) Problem with file Q 0143.SRV (TTS file..not changed) Problem with console.log length extended. Problem with console.log old lgth-0 new lgth = 65536
There is nothing running at night except the BE 8.5 backup pgm. No users work past 5PM. Network said that to protect disk integrity, it was closing down. By using Filer, I retrieved a previous copy of console.log and it had a bunch of garbage in it.

Does the server shut down if the backup does not execute? ----------------------------------------------------- "It's true, its damn true!" ----------------------------------------------------- |

No, the backup works fine. Someone suggested that I comment out the load conlog statement in the autoexec.ncf file, which I did, I also deleted the VR00000#.Fil files and since then the system has been running. Like I said earlier, when I looked at one of the old console.log files, the first 20 or so lines were find and then there was nothing but garbage in it.

By "network said" you mean that is the message on the file server console? Is there UPS software running on the server? Does the server shut down IMMEDIATELY after the backup is run? If so, is your tape drive and your hard drive(s) on the same controller? R.Sobelman www.tracklogins.com |
