Netware v3.11 on W2k Network

Netware v3.11 on W2k Network

(OP)
My question is quite simple.  I have an old novell network running 3.11 that had 5 stations running as clients.  These had floppies which booted up the stations to log in to the server and run an application.  Because this is a very old network, the stations have been slowly dying 1 at a time.  I am down to 2.  I made a new network with W2k.  no domain, just a small workgroup with 4 stations.  I installed all protocols and can see the novell server on the w2k station and can access files.  i need to urgently run the app as it contains databases that are over 12 years old.  The app does not have an .exe or .bat file.  The floopy wont work for it needs the protocol installed (i assume IPX).  Any ideas to make that app run?

Not sure if I follow you, how are you just accessing the databases? are you running the application on the local workstation and just linking to the databases?  If you can see the novell server then IPX is loaded but it could be that the application is too old to run on the Win2k system.  I think the key to this is how you're accessing the databases...let me know and I'll attempt to help you further.

I can see the server.  IPX is already loaded.  I copied everything from the server to my W2K station.  Within the files copied is the app that i need to run on W2k.  The other 2 novells stations have a floopy that boots the novell stations and points them to the server.  The server hosts the app.  i have all the info on the w2k network but I need to make that app run on a w2k environment.  i have tried running a VDM but it needs to IPX protocol loaded in a DOS environment.  Hope this helps and thanks a million...

WOW, now we may have problems.  What application is it? was it designed in house or is it an old over the counter application?  If I can get the name I might be able to assist you a little more but I'm not sure.   Have you attempted to load the protocol stack through a batch file as well as the application after you get the protocol stack loaded?  This could make your dos session extremely unstable but it might work.  If you can get me the name of the app I'll do some research on it for you.  I don't know if I can help you but I'll try.

It seems u are going to end up suicidal trying to solve this problem.  i know I did.  The app is almost 17 years old and it was not over the counter.  My friend and a couple of other ppl had this chinese guy write it for them.  We called the company after 17 years and to our surprise they still existed; however, they stopped supporting the app about 9 years ago and they have no clue where that chinese guy is.  The name is "EASY" (Exporting Accounting Software System")

We are, however, getting somewhere.  I want to load the protocol stack through a batch file, as well as the app.  I have the floppy that they use for their old stations and it has all the files that tell the station how to run the comp so it goes to the server and runs the app from there.  Here are the 2 problems, 1. I suck at DOS and dont know how to write the script so it will load the protocol stack.  Furthermore, I have a feeling since all of the apps files all already on my w2k station, i can probably rewrite a DOS file (maybe change it to point to my w2k station so the app can be accessed in the w2k station from other stations.) Refer to problem 1 in case u forget to tell me how to do that!!!  I have the floppy and can email it to you if u think it will be helpful.  I am at a loss and have explored every option possible; other than standing on my head!!

PS: Thanks again

RE: Netware v3.11 on W2k Network

Fab,

I'm pretty good at DOS, started in the NetWare 2.x age and been going back to that all the time to write some customized batch files.  If you want to e-mail me the disk just winzip it (or some other archiving utility) and I'll take a look at it.  I can't guarantee anything but I'll attempt to help you out.  When it comes to loading netware stacks I’m pretty good at that.

I’m thinking the application is looking to see if IPXSPX is loaded before it launches.  Setting up a batch file to load the network stack through a command window might work but it could also lock up the system we are attempting to load it on.  All we can do is try it and see what the results are.

I’m not a programmer but if you can change the application to stop looking for the network stack than that would be a pretty good idea.  Let me give it a try with the batch file and I’ll let you know what I find out.

you can send the file to sobak1@excite.com

RE: Netware v3.11 on W2k Network

Hi Ed and Fab,

I'm really curiuos as to how you got on.  especially interest as to what this was written in.  See I'm old code cutter from back in the days when we used punched cards!

I also recently went through issues with an old DOS db running on Netware 3.12 which we want ported to W2k.

I've just burnt that bridge and we are now using an Access db (yuk).
