Anyone else install this on a machine yet?  I did, and so far:

Laptap standalone installation and one workstation on a domain installed.

Both came up with the Automatic Updates icon after reboot, which was disabled on the laptop manually and SHOULD BE disabled by group policy on the workstation.

Any other issues?

Installed on my laptop.  So far, it's working OK.

Seems to have fixed the slowdown on Shutdown, that I was seeing. Also, it appears to actually be using the Hard Drive write cache correctly, which was "broken" in SP3.

It remains to be seen, what "Hotfix Horrors" MS will unleash on us, in the runup to SP5.

I tried posting something earlier but something happened and the ISP -- it fall down and go boom...

Anyway, I installed it on my home laptop and workstation, plus one workstation at work, and so far no major issues.  Only thing I noticed so far was that it activates the Automatic Updates service, even if you have the service set to "disabled".  I found that rather annoying.  Either killing it manually or rebooting a second time, and the service is back on its leash, or group policy takes hold and keeps it there.

Do we even think there will *be* and SP5?  Or should we just call that Windows 2003 professional?

SP4 is great!  The system simply runs better.  It shuts down far more quickly - saves settings in a trice.  I haven't had a single problem (YET - fingers crossed).  The automatic update service auto start is a very minor niggle and one that cannot easily escape attention since the icon shows itelf in the system tray.  It's a price worth paying for SP4's apparent considerable benefits.

IE Explorer 6 (SP1) seems more reliable.  MS seems to have addressed a whole lot of issues.  I wonder how much XP is now in Win2K?

I would like to add an afterthought that it is possible that system faults prior to installation of SP4 might have unfortunate interactions with SP4.  I would therefore suggest a fallback option like taking a Ghost image beforehand.  Mine seems to have been unnecessary (so far).

It amazes me how operating systems are absolutely riddled with bugs and yet they still work just fine.

The trouble with with bug fixes is that new bugs invariably result.  You fix code and so break it.

I take it, Eguy, that you have totted up 62 known bugs resulting from the implementation of SP4.  Is that is what is meant by 'Hot Fixes for SP4'?

Interesting.

Can't tell if it's a dual-boot option, however, since my laptop runs just fine with a Win2k Pro partition AND Gentoo Linux.  But, considering that GRUB handles the booting for either, that might be a non-issue for me.

I remember discussions from the SP3 days to install the network (file) version rather than going through Windows Update.  That might be something to consider for this round.

I installed SP4 on 3 workstations and I don't have any problem.  It didn't reactivate the Auto Update service.

Should I have waited to install SP4?

How long is a good wait before installing a SP anyway?

I began getting this error as soon as installed SP4:
The procedure entry point GetJobA could not be located in the dynamic link library SPOOLSS.dll

This error appears as soon as you log into my Windows 2000 workstation.

If I uninstall the Service Pack I do not get this error but I want to begin deploying this Service Pack because it has alot of new enhancements.

Does anyone have a fix? or Experienced the same thing?

littleonekat,

That particular function appears to be exported from WINSPOOL.DRV which on my SP4 machine is:

%systemroot%\System32 version 5.0.2195.6659

It's the part of SP4, so should be 112kb 06/19/2003

Mapleleaf,

Thanks for your response back.  I checked that file the files size and it has the files size that you specified but I found an additional winsrv.dll.000 with the same file size.  Should I delete the second one or delete both and reboot?%-

Littleonekat,

Highlight WINSPOOL.DRV, right-click and then Properties>Version.  The SP4 one is 5.0.2195.6659.

The *.000 files are from previous SP's. If you choose to Archive, then the SP3 files should be in %systemroot%\$NtServicePackUninstall$

Spoolss.dll should be version 5.0.2195.6699

The versions are important, since it looks like part of the spool was re-done for SP4.

An interesting question for you. Did you use the Express or Network install ??

I understand what you meant now.  The spool files that I mention prior were NTClient Install Archived files.  When I look in System32 for spoolss.dll the file size 80kb and it the version is 5.0.2195.6704.  As for they way I downloaded it I went to the Windows Update website and Clicked Scan for New Updates and downloaded SP4.  Instead of going to the support page and selecting the express or network install.

Do you think I should uninstall and install the Express Option of SP4 on the Support Website?

Thanks

Spoolss.dll is the correct size and version. Check the version of WINSPOOL.DRV (which exports GetJobA) in the same directory. its version should be 5.0.2195.6659.

Cathy,

That is the right version. The problem now is that there are 20 or so DLL's in the chain between SpoolSS and WinSpool.drv.

I'd try reinstalling your printer with the latest Win2K drivers.

Failing that pull down the Network Install from the link in the first message. Uninstall SP4. Reboot and shut down all Anti-Virus and Firewall services and programs and try a SP4 re-install.

Rblue,

The printer was not a network printer.  I use a Minolta 1100L laser printer that I had bought for like $75 after rebate 1.5 years ago.  I have not had a chance to try to just run the update without the printer drivers installed.  I doubt that it is the printer drivers that caused the reset but you can test it out.  Just make sure you image your Hard Drive before you mess with it.  I used Drive Image and it worked great because it allows you to reimage your C:\ even with Drive Image installed on the C:\.  If your results differ from ine please post a reply.  Thanks.

Norton Ghost is an essential weapon in your arsenal (or your tottenham hotspur for that matter).  Ghost can clone drives and partitions.  Ghost will clone disk to disk, disk to partition and partition to disk.  It will also clone drives and partitions to image files which may be on HDD or CD-R/RW.  Make sure you use the best CD-Rs or CD-RWs.

My workstation is a Win 2000 machine.  It has been up and running for months now and it was a fresh load not an upgrade.  I do print to 2 network printers a HP Laser Jet 4 and HP Color Laser 4550.

I looked in the registry and did not find that string.  I did find the following:

Default      Reg_sz         (no set value)
Driver       Reg_sz          HPBMMON.DLL
EOJTIMEOUT   REG_ DWORD      0x0000ea60(60000)

Maybe I need to move up the timeout to 12?

Thanks again.

MaxEd,
I am having the same problem you are with SP4 and my Minolta Page/Pro 1100L Printer.  I try to Print and both of my systems reboots.  I have 2 workstations with the Printer shared.  Both running Win2k Pro.  I can't print right now.

One system is a Dell PII 300 and my other system is a P4 2.4 that I put together with an abit MB.  I have the printer installed on the Dell, it's like my file/print server.

Have you found a solution to this problem we are having.  I thought it was my Zone Alarm Firewall that was causing it, tried to print w/o Zone Alarm running and it still rebooted.  Zone Alarm at least told me it was spoolsv.exe that caused it to reboot.

Anyones help is appreciated.

MaxEd,

First off, BACKUP to something !!

Next, open regedit and look at

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors

Highlight and Export as a "Win9X..." file.

Now, look at the monitors.  You should see "Minolta" in one or more keys. Note the Driver names (should be ???.dll), find them in %systemroot%\System32 and note the version numbers, size and date.

Now look in "Add/Remove .." and uninstall any Minolta utilities. Delete your Printer(s).  Reboot.

Look in %systemroot%\System32. If the DLL's from above are still there, rename them.  Delete the "Minolta" keys from the registry.

Pull down the latest driver from here. NO PageScope utility !!.  Install the driver, reboot and see if you can print.

Keep me posted

You are in the right place. For example, I have a Canon S520. So in monitors are 'BJ Language Monitor' & 'Canon BJ Language Monitor S520'. These are the "hooks" that pop-up the Canon Print Monitor.  There are others in there like 'Local Port' and 'Standard TCP/IP Port', all the things you could print to.

What happens if you boot with the 'spooler' disabled and then start it.  Are there any messages in the 'system' or 'application' event logs that would give us a clue as what's broken ??

Stop the Spooler and both WMI services

Then open RegEdit and go to

Add a new REG_DWORD called 'Disable Performance Counters' and make it's value 1 (decimal)

also go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\PerfProc\Performance

Add or Change the REG_DWORD value 'Collect Timeout' to 10000 (decimal)

Now restart the Spooler and both WMI services and check the event viewer.

Let me know what happens

Well, Event Log doesn't show me much.  Just trying to install the drivers for that Minolta Printer the system reboots.  I cleared the Event Log out and tried to install the drivers, i get the following in the Event Log.
-----
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x0000001e (0xc0000005, 0xbe197775, 0x00000001, 0x00000000). Microsoft Windows 2000 [v15.2195]. A dump was saved in: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini072103-01.dmp.
-----
I tried to look at the minidump file in notepad and boy I can't read it...

I need to try a few other things that ya'll suggested next.  Do ya'll think I need to tell Minolta to create new drivers for this printer?  Should I help them by sending any information, like the dump, to them so they can work on the new drivers?
MaxEd (TechnicalUser)
22 Jul 03 10:17
PlanetHigh,

Have you tried the network installation?  I'm not sure if that's any different than the normal windows update. I've given up on it already because Minolta has no updated drivers and I think the windows update has some bugs in it.  I am going to wait until they have the next service pack or try to find the individual components of the update and try updating one piece at a time to figure out which one is causing the reboot.

You may want to look at this KB article on removing Printer Drivers from Win2K.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q135406

The idea being to totally remove all traces and re-install using the latest Minolta driver from their web site. A note on Minolta's site makes reference to running 'setup.exe' from the expanded driver for WinXP and NOT to use 'Add Printers', it might be worth trying in 2000.

MINOLTA 1100L CAUSES ABRUPT SHUTDOWN IN SP4

I am having the same problem with my Minolta 1100L printer after installing SP4.

The specific error I get is with pwgdi.dll (or pwgdi.dl_ ) which is specific to the Minolta driver.
also in the message is

and some other stuff... it is the blue screen of death... unfortunately I did not leave myself the option to un-install sp4. Please let me know any ideas you have! I suppose I could re-install W2K from the disk.
I also tried installing the NT4 driver (doesn't work) and the XP driver, which appears to be exactly the same as the Win2K driver??? and the US and European version.

Has anybody found how to fix this problem?

Thanks for the suggestion, however, unfortunatly, this does not solve the problem.  Minolta's Driver, which they admit won't work with Windows XP, has not been updated to deal with SP4 yet.  I talked to Minolta, they seem to know it is a problem, and they said the would refer it to their "level 3 programmers".  Since SP4 seems to be essentially XP, I wonder what they'll be able to do.  Minolta said they would contact me within 24 hours, although that has already passed.. If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know!  This is very frustrating.

kemperr,

That's very interesting !!.

I'm not what MS changed in the Spooler process, I just know what the effects are. Cathy's problems with her LJ4 were a throwback to NT SP6, when there were a slew of spoolss errors.  HP seems to have re-written most of their drivers about a year ago, removing some of the dll's registered as print monitors, so re-installing the drivers fixed her problems.

One program that I've found helpful in troubleshooting problems is Process Explorer from Sysinternals

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

If you run it (set view to 'View DLLs')and select sroolsv.exe, you will see all of the loaded dll's in the lower window. You should be able to follow the trail all the way down to WINSPOOL.DRV

Hope this helps

For the record, here's my SP4 experience.
Ever since installing SP4, I now have 2 problems:

1. Every time I shut down the system (click shutdown->Yes) explorer.exe apparently tries to read from a null pointer.  The error happens every single time, and always is described as a failed attempt to read from 0x00000000.
The dialog box closes itself after a moment, but its still annoying.  I've installed SP4 on 2 systems.  I'm not sure, but I don't think this problem has occurred on the other computer.  As a side note, it seems like 90% of the application crashes I've ever had using win2k have come from explorer.exe, regardless of service pack version.  The explorer team needs help.

2. This one is much worse: my google bar doesn't work anymore.  I have tried uninstalling the google bar, and installing the newest version, but that didn't fix it.  If I run "Internet Explorer" explicitly, then the google bar is fine, but if I open "My Computer", then there's no google bar and it cannot be made to appear, even after navigating to a web site.  This is frustrating since I don't like to use the "Internet Explorer" shortcut - I find it superfluous.  The only consolation is the fact that the current version of the google bar does set itself up to be the default search engine, so typing a search term in the address box will work.  I have experienced this same problem on both of the 2 systems on which I've installed SP4.

I'm not aware of anything that SP4 has fixed.

With my experiences covering a vast array of situation deployment arenas, don't install SP4. If you must, uninstall all hotfixes prior to doing so.

I'm going to take your advise and not install Sp4.  My system is working fine........Why fix it.  I have allways kept up to date with all the updates that seem to address my machine.  I even avoided the last Big Blaster worm.

Thanks,

Well, I had Minolta email me the new drivers they have that fixes my print problem.  However, I can't install the new drives I'm getting the following error:

-----
Minolta Page Works/Pro 1100L Error
Find a new version in this system.
Setup will terminate.
(If you want to install this old version, please uninstall previous version first.)
-----

I opened up the registry and tried removing the drivers just like this KB said:  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q135406
I removed all the drivers in WINNT\System32\Spool\Drivers Like it said, rebooted several times and I still get the error when trying to run setup for the new drivers.

I'm almost to the point of formatting and reinstalling.

Any suggestions?

Policekauk:

I still have the same problems.  I haven't really done anything to try and fix it though, either.  I see you've already decided not to install SP4, but if you or anybody else does decide to try it, make sure you say YES when the installer asks if it should keep backup copies of the files it will change.  I always have said No to that question, but now I can't uninstall SP4 because of it.

PlanetHigh,

The way I fixed the problem was just deleting the folder where the minolta has installed the software.  Then I went through the registry and just deleted anything taht had minolta attached to it.  I couldn't use the uninstall either.  After you remove the minnolta related stuff from your registry then go install it.  I had no problems at all.

I know this is an old thread, but here's the problem I'm sure many have faced with this printer.  The "cover is open" message pops up when I try to print. I have contacted Minolta and they have decided to stop supporting this laser printer. With all the service pack updates I've done and a new OS (WinXP) installed on my PC, the only solution is to cancel the error message, turn off the printer and turn it back on, the printer works fine after doing this.  However, I have also had to reinstall from win2k since there is no XP driver for this printer.  One last thingn that I also had to try was assigning it to a different printer port.  If anyone has a better solution let me know!  I've not even printed 200 sheets with this darn printer!!

I am not familiar with the printer, but lets stop the notifications of perceived errors.

Start, Printers and Faxes, File, Server Properties, Advanced tab, uncheck any notification options on that page.
