We have played with this product long enough.  It has never provided the functionality we wanted.  I have been instructed to remove it from our multi server Novell network.  Beyond removing startup commands in the NCF files what else do I have to do?

NOTE:  We also will be removing Zen.  I will post a similar question in the Zen area.

GOsh, if you can;t get ZEN and Managewise to do what you want, good luck on findingh something that will.  Tivoli will be one of you options, but it by far is the worse to setup.  I would say that lack of skill and knowledge has resulted in this situation.

TO remove Managewise completely, you must visit the SUPPORT.NOVELL.COM website and do a search on uninstalling Managewise, there you will see step by step instructions to help you remove the product correctly.

May I ask what you are trying to achieve with T.E.D. and Net. Management??

The problem is support.  The school has paid extremely high invoices for extended support on both Zen and Managewise.  The companies we are working with are not small.  In all instances they are considered "major sources/players" in the networking market.

We got outstanding support from the Chicago offices as we put in the cable infrastructure.  But when they passed it to their field office the entire project became a cash cow/dead horse.  You cannot fake support for Novell.  Neither can you expect to learn the system on the schools money.

The school used a product called Fortress when they were in the 3.11 stage of Novell.  This product "locked" the workstations down to where students could not destroy mappings, print que assignments, distort desktops with new wallpaper, and create usless moving cursers.  When they did the workstation locked up and had to be rebooted.  Fortress returned the workstation to the saved default configuration.

This is the solution the school is considering for security.  This would kill 52% of my service calls relating to lost mappings, and distorted workstation functionality from kids trying to break the computer.  This is a case where the 10% are creating massive problems for the remaining 90% who do not abuse the systems.

As far as management at server level there are other approaches that can be done within Novell itself as well as some other 3rd party things we can use.

I would rather remain a Novell managed environment but when two years have been spent with support centers locally and no results the board is tired of payment without production.  I'm caught in the middle and spend half my day fixing workstation configuration problems that Zen/ManageWise is not capable of doing in our environment - from the configuration provided by these high cost Novell specialists.

My guess is that the best fix for our problems is to completely rebuild our servers and NDS.  But I do not have that option.  But I bet a "clean install and fresh rebuild" would solve a lot of problems.

Thanks for your response Mr. Green

WIth ZEN for desktops, have you locked down the policies for each of these workstations??  I would even take ZEN one step further and remove everying from teh start menu that the students do not need access to.  Next, I would only allow folders to be visible that the users can access.  In one place I have seen teh following done:

Start menu, completely removed, the only thing the users could do was login to the network and then a menu appeared which gave the users the options of which programs they could launch.  WIth ZEN doing a snappshpot of the final configuration, a user will not be able to have into the box without knowing how to UNHIDE the content.  This will be very difficult to do if all they have is a menu with dedicated options.

If you could look into this, I would be you could prevent student from making changes.  ZEN has this capability and I would start there...
