Hard disk data recovery problem

Platter drive motor failed on my Caviar 850 Mb drive
during Lost&Found data recovery.
Removed platter/hub assembly & installed into known good
identical drive.
Upon startup, read/write head moves from park zone roughly to centre of platter, pauses briefly, & then moves to extreme outside & stays there.
Lost&Found shows that it is doing a disk analysis, but the R/W heads remain on the outside diameter until the drive is powered down.
What is causing this, & how to fix?
