How to prevent my IP address from being broadcast

Hi,
Sometimes when on the Inet I get these popup alerts saying my IP address is being broadcast on the inet. How do I prevent this? I use ZoneAlarm home addition. Is there a way to set it to prevent this or must I do it through Windows somehow? I use Win98 and IE 6. I looked in the IE setup Options - Advanced and didn't see a box to check to prevent the IP address from being seen on the Inet. Maybe it's something that's a function of the security level I choose.

Hi mate,

Simple answer, you can't do it.

You can in a matter "hide" your IP by using a proxy server, but there is always an IP address sent to the net.

I don't see the problem anyway, nothing can be gained by getting an IP address. Some adverts use this as a gimmick to fool you into buying their product, then if you did buy that product and visit the same page again, you would still see that same message.

Just as a further comment on those popup ads - they are a popup ad - the firm providing these is apparently being taken to court for misleading users (as the ad's are too similar to Windows menus and could be assumed to be coming from the user's O/S). The article I read also says they are stating the obvious (i.e. IP address not hidden, internet connection is slow etc etc), and that their programs won't improve your system anyway.

Just another misleading message: Watch out for programs asking permission to download that say they are "partners" with Microsoft - best example is hotbar. These programs are normally spyware that would love nothing better than to make sure you get more popups, etc. Spybot is an excellent program that can check and/or remove spyware.

Dear All,
One of the best answers is to install Opera7
http://www.opera.com/download/
and set it to only open popups that you request.
Then you aren't bothered by the popups!
They never seem to have any decent things in them anyway so you aren't missing anything.

Re: the pop-up blocking issue.

The latest Google toolbar has pop-up blocking as an option, and even though I've only been using it for a couple of days, it seems to be working flawlessly so far.

Mozilla also blocks popups. that and the tabbed browsing make it way better than IE.
To tell you that your computer is broadcasting an IP address is like saying that your car is burning gas. It is helpfull if you set up behind a router. Then the only address that is sent is the address of the router itself, and the private, non-routable addresses of the computers behind the router are never seen on the net.

I've been using Pop-Up Stopper Free Edition for about a month, and it works great.

You can download free from www.panicware.com. You can see the pop-up, well, pop up, but then it closes immediately.
