Notes Freezes at the Password Screen

I have been using Notes on my home PC for years. I am using R4.5x. Starting two days ago Notes began freezing at the password prompt. In fact, the password prompt freezes before the prompt fully develops. I can't get past it. I tried reloading Notes, but to no avail. I need help.

Try running a compact on your mailfile.

Thanks for your replies.

I found the source of the problem. About three weeks ago I changed a monitor setting. The monitor was set to 256k colors, so I changed it to 32 bit color. What an improvement for montior. After more than a week removing files, and applications, checking the Registry document(not that I knew what I was looking at or for), reinstalling Notes a million times, I remembered that I made this little change. I reset my monitor to 256k color pallet, and low-and-behold Notes is working fine.
