How can you export a report generated by Filemaker 5.0 to an Excel spreadsheet? Filemaker will let me "print to file" but I have no idea what to do with the file it generates. I know how to export data but not a report. Is it even possible to export a report?

In a word - No!
Sorry but I have spent many hours on this and a similar problem.  Eventually, I gave in and called FMP, who charged me some outrageous price to tell me it couldn't be done.
You can, however, export every field on the report.  Check out export of Summaries for summary fields.  This is probably better anyway because it will give you beter control over the fields.
