Well the question is more of a where and not a how to....

To test a 56k modem that does not have a phone line pluged in you run a local analog loopback test.

ok where do you run this test?

Well if it is different in the various flavors of Windows... I will need to know how to perform the task in all of them.

well in 98 you can run a test in control panel, modem, diagnostics tab, and select your modem and hit more info,  but i dont know about any ohter os , i have never needed to do it,  i hope that is what your talking about,
