Backup/Restore Speeds?

Backup/Restore Speeds?

(OP)
A very open question!! But, can anyone tell me what sort of backup and restore speeds they get using EMC's EDM Software, backing up either Unix or NT boxes, over a 100 Mb link. Other factors like tape drive, type of LAN (fibre or CAT5) etc, don't worry about. For info we use Quantum 7000 DLT drives in a Storagetek and ALT Silo's.

I know this a bit of open question but any info that you have found out would be marvolus! Info like total size of backup, number of files, spec of Network and Tape drives used, and speed (MB/S or GB/Hr) would be really helpful.

Thanks very much.

RE: Backup/Restore Speeds?

Hi,
we have DLT7000 drives and mainly w2k boxes.
You'll find out that UNIX are better for EDM.
Our network connection is cat5 and 100Mb.
I usually see speeds of about 5GB/h but it can deteriorate the more jobs you throw at the network connection. In fact if the connection does too much some of the jobs just fail.
We have recently been looking into a gigabit connection into the EDM to resolve our issues.

If you need more info then please get in touch, I'd be happy to help. In fact it would be good to have someone with similar problems to discuss issues with as EMC arent too helpful at the best of times.

RE: Backup/Restore Speeds?

Is there an underlying problem that you are trying to resolve, which you believe is attributed to EDM. Have you tried native LAN backups to a drive in your TLU as a test?

RE: Backup/Restore Speeds?

We recover a mixed EDM environment with DLT7000, STK9840, and Sony DTF tape media. We have found that the Sony DTF media is currently the fastest tape, with the 9840 media right behind.
