Anyone had a problem with laptops overheating?

Specifically, one of the VP's has a new Dell.  If its on a while it shuts down.  I'm thinking its doing it because its overheating.  The two funs come on intermittantly.  Is there some setting to change? or is this a "send back to Dell" hardware problem.?

" If its on a while it shuts down. "

If that is when it is not in use I think the BIOS is noticing that there is no activity and is shutting down to save the battery, even if it is plugged in the Energy Star is ticking on inactive systems.

One thing to remember is that the cooling fans on the laptop will not run all the time like the would on a desktop.  The laptop fans will only turn on according to a 'thermal table' that is built into the BIOS code.

Another thing to remember is that for energy star compliant laptops ... the power options default to system standby after 20 minutes of inactivity even when its on ac power.  When on battery the computer will do system shutdown after 5 minutes.

The last one is something that usually catches me as something I forget to change on laptops that I roll-out.

Check those power settings, also in BIOS you should change power management to customized.  That allows windows to be the primary controller of power settings.

Hope that helps,

Thanks for your responses.  But it will shut if he's using it.  When it does, He just lets it stay off a while, and starts it back up.  Its ok for a while.

Have you seen this occur or are you going by what he is telling you?  Users have a way of not knowing the important details .
