I have some Vectra Vei8's that need backing up via Backup Exec yet the users keep turning off their machines- I am having a hard time locating info on the wake on lan option.... does it just do it automatically when you install the agent on the machine or do need to utilize Top Tools some how--- or is a management program needed like HP OpenView?

From my limited experience, you will need two parts. The first is a LAN card that supports wake-up on Lan and the other is some software. We use 3Com cards and Intel's LANDesk. The biggest problem we have is if the user puts the PC into Shutdown without turning off the PC (the NT shutdown screen shows the box with "Press any key to reboot" or something like that). In this case, we still have to go to the PC and manually reboot the PC.

Also, sometimes wake-up does work for some reason. One time we try to wake up a PC it will work, and the next it won't.

So the formula is a wake-on-LAN card and a management software.  I set up OpenView to "attempt" a wake-up call but haven't been successfule yet.  It is too bad Veritas didn't encorporate a wake-on-LAN option in it's backup exec.

Thanks
