9608 Now Randomly Registering as a 4624?

9608 Now Randomly Registering as a 4624?

(OP)
So I set up a VPN Tunnel for a Client that has a Small Remote Office. This Small Remote Office is utilizing the Avaya IP Office over the VPN Tunnel at the main Site.

I have two 9608's Set up at the Remote Office. I just received a call that the display has changed on one of them.

I logged into Manager, and it is now showing the Phone Type as a Avaya 4624. The heck?

Same deal in System Status

Ideas?

RE: 9608 Now Randomly Registering as a 4624?

Seen this before with a firmware mismatch on the phone.

RE: 9608 Now Randomly Registering as a 4624?

Seen it also, always when across VPN , you will often find when they show like that some menus/features don't work properly/at all either smile

amriddle01: Yes, the buttons are moved over one row. I deleted the Extension and re-created it and that resolved the issue....for now. Is there a fix?

RE: 9608 Now Randomly Registering as a 4624?

Make sure the 9608 is running the correct firmware for the release you are on. You can find the correct firmware for your release by looking at the tech bulletin for said release.

For example, if you are running R9.0.6 (choosen at random) your phone should be running 6.3.1.16_V452. If you are running the newest firmware, or an old firmware, then you could have this issue. IP office wants you to run the firmware on the phone to match the control unit software. Upgrading to the newest firmware and/or leaving the firmware that was shipped on the phone is generally a bad idea.

The truth is just an excuse for lack of imagination.

Should the phones not pull the correct firmware from the IPO when they connect?

RE: 9608 Now Randomly Registering as a 4624?

Yes, if you have configured them to do that :)

janni78: if you mean point it to HTTP/HTTPS Server of the IPO, then yes. If not, then no i did not, Pointers? :)

Also, To Confirm the Version of Firmware on the phone, let me know if this is correct way(sorry - never really had to mess with the firmware before as I assumed it was pulling it from the IPO)

RE: 9608 Now Randomly Registering as a 4624?

It "should" pull it down. Sometimes it doesn't. You can check firmware version in SSA, Monitor, or on the phone itsself.

RE: 9608 Now Randomly Registering as a 4624?

(OP)
They are running 8.0(44) thumbsdown

Firmware Version in SSA is showing:
- Extension 4075: 6.6228
- Extension 4075: 6.6228

RE: 9608 Now Randomly Registering as a 4624?

So it looks like they should be on: 6.2.2.09U_V452

RE: 9608 Now Randomly Registering as a 4624?

Yes they want to be 6.2.2. If they were shipped with 6.6 you're probably screwed. They ship with a minimum firmware version and simply will not downgrade past it. You can try and find some old stock 9608s and try and get one with the right firmware. Or just upgrade the IPO. Being they they're on 8.0 my vote is upgrade :)

RE: 9608 Now Randomly Registering as a 4624?

(OP)
Sounds like a good reason to Upgrade :)

RE: 9608 Now Randomly Registering as a 4624?

This is actually similar to what I found out about the D100 bases. The newer ones (16WZ or 17WZ) will not function on R8.1 or R9.0.0 or R9.1.0 as the lights turn off and never come back on and only have ethernet light activity. You can still get into maintenance mode but once connected back to system do the same thing. If you upgrade to R9.0.12 or R9.1.11 they then can work but any version of R8.1 or lower they are now incompatible. So it seems like if you have older systems you really need to upgrade the system to at a minimum of 9.1 if you want to purchase new hardware (D100 or 9608 for sure).

The truth is just an excuse for lack of imagination.

Here is something I found Interesting in our Own IPO Embedded Files.

I was doing some testing in our Lab and noticed that My Phones were grabbing the wrong Firmwere for the IPO Version.

One of our Test Systems is on R9.1.6 and according to the Tech Bulliton, My Phones Should be Pulling Firmware Version 6.6.1.15_V474 for our 9608's

The Phones were actually Pulling Firmware Version 6.4.0.14_V452

I decided to poke around in the Embedded File Management and noticed both Firmware Versions
• (6.6.1.15_V474 - What the Phone Should of Pulled) and
• (6.4.0.14_V452 - What the Phone actually pulled)

Since this is our test system, I was thinking that maybe for some reason or another, someone added in the older Firmware Verson of: 6.4.0.14_V452

So I removed this file from the embedded File Management, Cleared the phones and re-configured them. During the first bootup, the phone was once again looking for the Older Version of 6.4.0.14_V452, in which of course it could no longer find and it 404'ed and just booted up.

Ideas? Am I doing Something Wrong? Should Both Firmware Files indeed be in the Embedded File Management?

I am trying to wrap my head around this Firmware stuff.

Thanks.

Aegis, sounds like the 96xx upgrade file didn't get updated. i bet if you formatted the SD card and then recreated it the issue would go away.
