Config files not appearing in Manager folder on Windows 10

Config files not appearing in Manager folder on Windows 10

(OP)
I found references to this issue in some older posts but I need to bring it up again.
OS:
Win10 upgraded from WIN 8.1
Manager 9.1 or 10.0

ISSUE:
When opening Manager, your CAN view and open all sites .cfg & .bak files.
However, you CAN'T find these files in the MANAGER folder using Explorer or Command line.
Also, for example, within Manager, Try to start the "Open config" process, find the file, try to Copy/Paste or Drag to a folder other than MANAGER.
You get a file not found error >
http://files.engineering.com/download.aspx?folder=...

IMPACT:
Can't "backup" your customer .cfg. & .bak files because you can't "see" or access them except within manager.
Does not give you warm fuzzies that future upgrades to customer IPO's will not have any weird issues.

What you CAN do.
Open individual config files and do a "Save As" to a different folder as a backup.

Things I've tried:
Running Manager as Administrator- No Change
Running CMD as Administrator to "see" the files in the Manager folder. No change

Advice I'm hoping for:
I get it that this a "PERMISSIONS" problem, but I'm not savy enough to do things like randomly
changing Permissions on the Manager folder and not expecting other repercussions.

Can anyone suggest a way to say, Uninstall Manager and do a fresh install in such a way that I don't have these "permission" problems.

RE: Config files not appearing in Manager folder on Windows 10

I have not run into this issue, however I have had another issue with Windows 10. When you have a fresh system, and select basic mode or standard or server, you select standard and it presents the config as if in standard but is actually in basic mode. Sending an offline config fixes the issue. I just chalk it up as a Windows 10 bug and have a Windows 7 computer ready in case I run into more fun with Windows 10. I would suggest doing the same if at all possible.

RE: Config files not appearing in Manager folder on Windows 10

Are you using the thin or thick client of Manager? If your using Manager Light, such as you would download from server edition, I do not believe you will get certain files in Manager folder.

RE: Config files not appearing in Manager folder on Windows 10

Have a look in C:\User\<login>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files(x86)\Avaya\IP Office\Manager

I haven't personally been able to nail down why but it seems to vary between systems that started life as Windows 10 and older systems with Manager that got upgraded to 10.

Stuck in a never ending cycle of file copying.

RE: Config files not appearing in Manager folder on Windows 10

That's right the files are hidden. This feature can be confirmed.
Start saving to a new folder external to program files, like /documents/avaya/manager configs.

My advice and your homework: start saving elsewhere and report back with a method to get permission on the folder to view hidden files.

It's not rocket signs purple.

I agree with the workaround of changing the working directory for .cfg files to one I "own".
But I'm still experimenting.
Here is the latest...which I can't beleive!!!!

I opened a ticket with our 3rd party IT support group.
They spent a lot of time experimenting with file/folder permissions.
No luck. Still had no access to "hidden files"

Attempt 1- Uninstall/Reinstall Manager
  • Uninstall Manager Admin Suite via Add/Remove programs
  • Program Uninstalled but the Manager folder itself was still there
  • Deleted the Manager folder
  • Ran the install without issues
  • Connected to an IpO
  • Config opened and read in
  • Made and saved a config change (add user)
  • Closed the config
  • Did a File-Open Configuration...and WHAT???...Saw ALL the same old .cfg & .Bak files have come back from the DEAD.
  • Opened the config again and noted that my User change was still there.
Attempt 2-
  • Uninstalled the Admin Suite again
  • IT folks performed a Seek & Destroy of all possible file remnants based in part on "sizbut's" comment of
  • "Have a look in C:\User\<login>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files(x86)\Avaya\IP Office\Manager"
  • They found a bunch of files and deleted them.
  • Re-Installed Admin Suite as ADMINISTRATOR this time.
  • Manager installed fine.
  • Verified no other .cfg or .bak resided in Manager folder
  • Connected to an IpO.
  • Started a series of 3 "change & saves" to the IpO
  • Now saw that teh Mananger folder had the xxx.cfg and xxxV1.bak xxxV2.bak xxxV3.bak
  • AND...Hallelujah !!! No more old files I could "see" and move the files. I had full access.
  • I did 2 more config changes and then BAAAAMMMMMM....it broke again.
  • I noticed in the Explorer window Avaya/Manager that I did NOTsee the expected xxxV4.bak and xxxV5.bak reflecting the last 2 changes.
  • I closed the config and did a File-Open Configuartion and WTF??? ALL the "old" .cfg & .bak files re-resurected themselves from the DEAD
  • Same exact problem back again.
AND..futhermore if you examined the datestamp in Explorer of the IpO's .cfg file....it is "stale" as compared to the same file when you do
a File-Open-Configuration in Manager. And of course the data is different.

Sounds like I need my laptp re-imaged?

RE: Config files not appearing in Manager folder on Windows 10

Just change your working directory and work on stuff that makes money.

Case Closed. Implemented suggested work around.

After beating this dead horse, and finding that no matter what we did to destroy any remnants of Manager old inaccessible .cfg.& .bak files would magically come back into the Manager folder, I did, as advised, change the working directory of the configs to one I "owned".

After further testing, I had no more problems.
