Can someone help please.  I am running Stac Replica on an NT 4 Server and when backing up, it is getting the following error messages:

Error closing data set (5207)
Error writing to destination HP C1537A (5059)
Data error (cyclic redundancy error)
Engine aborted the backup (1032)

I have had a new tape drive put in.  The tape drive and CD rom are both terminated separately.  New tapes and a new motherboard and reinstalled the software.

Any ideas / help would be muchly appreciated.

Have you tried cleaning the drive before using the new tape ?

What applications are you running also on the server - any databases, IIS, FTP - Replica does not like these very much but there is a way to make your backups work by stopping services for a few minutes.

Also check your drive - run a chkdsk.

There is a lot of other things you may try.

I am getting this same error:

Process unsuccessful, Please try again [5050] The request could not be performed because of an I/O error.
Cannot replicate session R:\ [5041]

Same message. Same problem.

I've been using the backup system for 1 year without problems. Two days ago I installed a new hard drive (G:) in my NT. Since then, the back-up log shows exactly he same problem described.

The new drive aparently is OK (no problem in the OS, was working before correctly, ...) The new drive (13Gb) is half occupied (6Gb). The new drive has just a single partition for the whole disk, formated in NTFS. This error happens when backuping all the drives alltogether (C: to G:) and when trying to backup just the new drive alone. (The log/history always indicates the error when working on drive G:).

Of course, tried with different tapes, different jobs. CHKDSK ok.

Anyone got an answer?. What are you doing to backup your systyems?

I have a server with two SCSI hard drives wich I've been backing up with no problems. Now I've installed a new IDE hard drive and have exactly the same problem that has aliatec.

Try this...

Click on Services (go to Start, Settings, Control Panel). Find Replica Service and press stop button. Let the service stop, then choose start. Then restart server.

These errors occur because your tape can't hold all the data you are trying to back up. In theory a Travan TR-5 cartridge can hold up to 20GB of data but this assumes a compression ratio of 2:1 (the reality is that a Travan TR-5 can hold 10GB of uncompressed data). Depending on the nature of your data this ratio may not be achieved. In my case my 12GB of uncompressed data don't fit in a single tape (I guess it's because most part of it are JPEG's wich may be difficult to compress more).

That's why I can't back up all my three hard drives together but have no problem when backing up any of the drives alone.

I have 9 servers and this problem has occurred on 2 of them. I have tried uninstalling, new drives etc but nothing seemed to work until last week we had a power cut on one site. The system rebooted and the errors disappeared! Having copied the important data off I then logged all the users off and pulled the power on the second server - It too has worked fine since. I know it's the worst thing you can do (especially without a current backup) but for some reason when you prevent a proper shutdown the errors go!
