How do I modify the column format on a composite datawindow?

How do I modify the column format on a composite datawindow?

(OP)
I have a datawindow in a trailer band for which I wish to change the number format.
I use the following command
ls_ret=dwchild.modify(collected.Format="#########0.00;[RED](#########0.00);#########0.00" unpaid.Format="#########0.00;[RED](#########0.00);#########0.00" ")

Ls_ret is returned empty, indicating success, but the format of the numbers displayed remains unchanged e,g. 1,234.56. I am using PB12.5.2 on Windows 8. I have heard a rumour that it is not possible to modify child datawindow column properties outside of the detail band - is this true? I have successfully changed fonts using similar syntax to the above in the trailer band, though this fails in the summary.
