problem with private page loading only in Firefox

problem with private page loading only in Firefox

(OP)

I'm trying to link to a private page from a public page.

I made the destination page (recent-paintings) private so it doesn't show up in the menu. Problem is it only loads in Firefox,--- in the other major browsers; chrome, safari, opera, IE it goes to the index page.

go to link: http://rossow-web.com/paintings/ -then- click on link 'recent work'

notice it goes to URL http://rossow-web.com/recent-paintings/ where 'recent work' should be but instead displays the main index page. ....

try this in fire fox first to see the correct way... then try in the other browsers....

Any thoughts how I can fix this so it works in all browsers?

thanks in advance!

RE: problem with private page loading only in Firefox

i can't see (yet) how this can be a browser issue.

on my three browsers the links work as you describe first (i.e. the 'wrong' way).

but if this slug is set to private, then this is the behaviour I'd expect it to be visible only to the author and admins. thus one has to be logged on to view it.

so I suspect that the browser anomalies you saw were related to the logged on status (or at least the presence of the logged-on cookie) in one browser to the other.

ahhhh!! that makes sense now.... thank you jpadie!

I just logged out in FIREFOX and reloaded the webpage and sure enough the 'private' pages won't load now....

like I said the purpose is to keep the pages from appearing in the menu.

I designed this theme from scratch and might be missing some files/codes...reason i say this is when I'm logged in using firefox, and viewing the page in a separate tab, i don't see the dashboard at the top...like you would in other themes....

ok, so now i know why this is happening.... do you have any idea how i can link to pages and keep them from appearing in the menu?

jpadie, i think i just fixed the problem!!!!!!

i downloaded this plugin -- https://wordpress.org/plugins/exclude-pages/

and it works great!!

thanks for helping me discover the initial issue.....

could you verify that it works on your end? you obviously need to refresh your browser....

RE: problem with private page loading only in Firefox

seems to work.

you can exclude pages as well simply by building your own menus (within wordpress) rather than using an automatically generated version.

one comment is that in the recent-paintings page it is difficult to tell whether the page is still loading or the images are intended to cut off where they do (it is the latter). This is because of the visual spacing between the lines. You could help the eye by adding some visual hinting, such as a white border around each photo holder.

I notice that I'm not able to click on the second row of images. I wonder whether this is intended?

RE: problem with private page loading only in Firefox

Yea i'm still working on that page....the second image is going to be linked...and i was going to add text... this page is a sub page.....for design sake i really would have preferred to design drop down menus....so i don't have the user going to all these pages....

this is the custom site i created: http://www.mountainhighorganics.com/

i'd like to build my sub menus like that but i forget..... plus my custom theme is bare bones and i know i'm missing some php files...

any thoughts?

i got another question for ya.... i been trying to change the opacity of the roll over / tool tip... i want it to look like this page:

http://www.benaronson.net/painting-gallery/oils/wa...

i been looking through the code but can't find where it hints to anything ...

RE: problem with private page loading only in Firefox

the first menu is a simple css dropdown. have a look at csstricks for examples.

i'm not a designer and css is not my forte but it looks to me like the second site is using a standard tooltip plugin and the opacity is set by reference to the resultant parent element's css (#tooltip) at 0.85.

tooltip issue ---- got it! thanks!
