Google XML Sitemap plugin returning server url not website url

Google XML Sitemap plugin returning server url not website url

Google XML Sitemap plugin returning server url not website url

Hi, we messed ourselves up and hope someone can help us out. Versions of software are:

Wordpress 3.6, Google XML Sitemap plugin 3.2.9, Shopsite 10 SP2 R3.1

We have wordpress blog pages and product pages in shopsite.
The blog page urls are: www.website.com/blog-about-something/
The product page urls are: www.website.com/store/product-name.html

The sitemap.xml file produced by the plugin was outputting the urls correctly for the wordpress pages (for upload to google webmaster tools) but not for the products. It would output /store/product-name.html in the sitemap which GWT rejected causing the products to not get indexed along with the blog pages.

We tried updating the plugin to version 4.0.6 (most recent) but did not like the inability to manually generate the sitemap so we downgraded back to 3.2.9. We then figured out that we could fix the output of the products by changing the 'alternate url' in wordpress from '/store/product-name.html' to 'http://www.website.com/store/product-name.html' by using the 'page links to' plug in (version 2.8).

The problem now is that the blog pages in the sitemap point to the webhost url instead of our website url:
https://whale.secure-host.com/website/blog-about-s...
which is not a valid url when entered in the browser. The blog page still works on the website but the sitemap generates errors from GWT since it is not valid.

So somehow we lost the mapping that was originally there before we upgraded (then downgraded) the XML Sitemap plugin. Is there a way to restore the mapping? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

RE: Google XML Sitemap plugin returning server url not website url

As it IS running on WordPress why do you even need an "XML sitemap" they are ONLY of use when or if the website navigation creates problems for search crawlers, leaving them unable to access some parts of the website that need to be crawled, and WP navigation simply doesn't do that.

Hi, thanks for the reply. We inherited this setup and are learning everything from scratch. After doing some reading, many articles/books suggested installing a sitemap plugin. Since it was already there we started playing with it and the above ensued. It is comforting to know that it is not critical but just a 'nice to have'.

We came to the conclusion that either we missed some setting or the original configuration included modifications in the sitemap code that we blew away when we upgraded it. Will keep you posted as to the final outcome.
