I have a request from client to send notify me as an actual user defined in exchange server.

Notify ME : source and destinations email addresses should be the same i.e From : abc@abc.com to : abc@abc.com

my client is using mail gateway and server alias in "Mail Options"

I changed changed the server alias to "abc.com", I can send emails to external addresses like yahoo, hotmail but system doesn't send email to internal addressed, in other words system doesn't send if From/To servers are same, I can see the following entry in SMTP IN log that message was send but this message did not hit the exchange.

Please note that when I installed outlook restricted client then all messages are downloaded, but customer wants to receive notifications to their exchange user/inbox.

abc@abc.com sent 850 bytes to abc@abc.com

any ideas ?

I assume that abc@abc.com is this users real exchange email right ?


If that is the case then it would be like ken@123.com is the sender and the dest is the same. The firewall or the Exchange server itself is looking at this and rejecting it as it knows it did not come from it self.

And in reality why would they want it to come from the same? Is it because they want to reply by email and not voice mail ?

client is moving to office 365, and as per office 365 requirement, it can only route messages to internet routable domains.

to accomodate the above requirement, only solution is to configure source/destination with same domains.

what I noticed if server alias and notify domains are same then it is considered internal email and messaging is not even trying to route the email using exchange gateway.
