Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

(OP)
I am unable to succesfully Save a report to our BOE [BusinessObjects Enterprise] server using the Save As [Enterprise] option of Crystal Reports Developer 2011.

I have confirmed that I can log on to the BOE server Central Mgmt Console. I am currently able to upload reports

When I attempt the Save As, I am specifying the same server/logon credentials in the [Log On to BusinessObjects Enterprsie] dialog that I use to get in via CMC, however; I receive the following error when I click OK.

Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred.
As tyou can see, the message is not very helpful.

I get the same error when trying to use the Report Upload Wizard.

I am assuming that something is not configured properly or not running on the server but I am not sure where to look.

NOTES:
I am currently able to upload reports to the server from within the Central Mgmt Console via Add -> Local Document when the Folders section, but my boss wants the ability to save to the server from within the Crystal Reports 2011 Developer.

I appreciate any suggestions, advice, etc.

RE: Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

(OP)
Clarification:
I am thinking that the server needs to be configured to allow the Save-As Enterprise access.
When I mentioned that I can sign on to the server Central Mgmt Console, that is as an administrator. I suspect that the Save-As capability (from client PCs running Crystal 2011) might need a different service running on the server. I know very little about Crystal Reports and the client server model, etc. and appreciate any and all suggestions.

RE: Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

Are you logging in as Administrator from Crystal? If not, what happens when you do? There are a couple of server processes that need to be running in order to publish a report:

Input File Repository Server
Crystal 2011 Report Application Server

(This is assuming that you're running BO 4.0 or CRS 2011 - Crystal 2011 will only connect to these versions!)

The user ID that you're logging in under also needs to have access to the Public Folders (Top level folder) and to "create objects" in at least one folder in the public folders in order to save the report to a public folder. That's why I suggest testing with the Administrator user.

What are you entering as the "System"? This needs to be the name of the server where the CMS is running, followed by a colon and the name server port of the CMS - by default this is ":6400". If you're logging in to the CMC using a cluster name (starts with "@"), the first time you log in from Crystal you need to connect directly to a server instead of the cluster. This will configure a registry setting that will specify which servers are in the cluster. So, you also need to have rights to write to the registry when you do this.

RE: Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

(OP)
I am finally getting back to this issue.......

I am attempting to save my report to the server via CR Developer on my local PC and choosing Save As - Enterprise and using the same server and admin account credentials that I use when logging in to the Central Mgmt Console (CMC). I still get the same result that I reported back in October [Internal error / unknown exception] during the log on process. I also get this same behavior trying to connect using the Report Upload Wizard.

Using CMC, I have verified that the following servers are currently running:
+ InputFileRepository
+ CrystalReports2011ReportApplicationServer

Do you know if there might be specific server settings or additional configuration on the server that I need to check?

thanks.

RE: Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

You may want to look at applying the latest service pack to your Crystal Reports installation to see whether that will help. Another option might be to do a "repair" install on your current version of Crystal just in case something has become corrupted and is causing your issue.

RE: Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

(OP)
I currently have the following listed under XP Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs.
+ Crystal Reports 2011 SP4
+ Crystal Reports 2011 SP7 Update
The Repair is prompting for the installation media which I do not have so currently a reinistall or repair is not something that I can do.

Quick question:
When using Upload Wizard and/or Save-As Enterprise, should I be specifying the same connection credentials as when I log on to the server and use Central Mgmt Console? I am hoping that maybe I need to specify a different port or something.

Thanks.
Bill

RE: Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

No, it all works off of the same port and connection info.

Do you also have any of the BusinessObjects Client Tools installed? If so, what is the version of the Client Tools? Which was installed first, Crystal or the Client Tools? In the past I've seen some conflicts between the two, although I haven't heard of any for the latest versions of BO.

RE: Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

(OP)
In all truthfullness, I do not know if the Client Tools are installed. We have a Network Admin group that performed the installation of BusinessObjects Enterprise software onto the server. My role in this is to administer the BO application, but not the physical server and/or operating system. I know this makes things difficult, but that is the way it is.

Is there a way to tell if the Client Tools are installed via the CMC or BI Launchpad?

Thanks.

RE: Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

Is Crystal installed on the same server as where you're running BO? If that's the case, that could be the cause of your issue. This configuration was supported with earlier versions of BO, but it's not recommended with the latest versions. You should have Crystal installed locally on your workstation.

RE: Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

(OP)
The SAP Crystal Reports 2011 Client that I am using to try to connect to the server via Enterprise is [CR Developer and Report Upload Wizard] is installed on my local Windows XP PC (not the BO server [Windows Server 2008]).

I am 95% sure that they did not install SAP Crystal Reports 2011 on the same box as BO.

I can request to have the Client Tools installed on the server, but am hoping that I can be sure if they are not already there before asking. Another issue that we have is there are no Crystal gurus here so I need to make sure to refer to the various pieces as they are named/labelled so that the Network Admins can locate the correct downloads, installs, etc.

What doesn't help matter much is that all of this stuff seems to go by various names (BO, BOE, Crystal Server, XI, Crystal Developer, Crystal 2011, Enterprise) and everyone and their brother has products on the web named Enterprise, Intelligence and Object making it very difficult to find information.

thanks

RE: Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

Since you're communicating to a BI4 system, you will likely need the SAP BusinessObjects .NET SDK Runtime file (32 bit) installed on your workstation.

There's nothing extra to install on the Server.

In prior versions of BOE, all you needed was the Client Tools (still a good idea to install them).
The SDK was installed with the Client Tools.

This is no longer true in BI4, hence the requirement for the .NET SDK Runtime.

You will likely need to download this from SAP.
You need to make sure it's for the correct SP that you're using on the Server.

Thanks Bob S. I will try to locate the .NET SDK Runtime and install it.

RE: Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

Hi Bob Suruncle,

I cannot find the SDK Runtime [SAP BusinessObjects .NET SDK Runtime file]. The only SDK runtime file that I located was SBOP BI PLAT .NET SDK RT 4.0 for Windows Server on IA32 32bit. Sounds like that file is for the server.

I am so confused.

I appreciate any suggestions or calrigfication.

RE: Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

We're using 4.1 SP1 here, so here's the file that we would use for SP1:

51046777_2 SBOP BI PLATFORM 4.1 SP1 ENTER .NET SDK RUNTIME WINDOWS

For SP2
51047189_2 SBOP BI PLATFORM 4.1 SP2 .NET SDK RUNTIME WINDOWS (32B/64B)

These are for 4.0 Make sure you get the one that matches your SP level:
51041019_3 SBOP BI PLATFORM 4.0 SP02 ENTER .NET SDK RUNTIME WIN (32B)
51043405_3 SBOP BI PLAT .NET SDK RUNTIME 4.0 SP04 (w/ FP03) WIN(32/64B)
51044710 SBOP BI Platform 4.0 SP05 .NET SDK Runtime Win
51046024_2 SBOP BI PLATFORM .NET SDK RUNTIME 4.0 SP06 WINDOWS (32/64B)
51046795_2 SBOP BI PLATFORM 4.0 SP7 .NET SDK RUNTIME WINDOWS (32B/64B)
51047180 SBOP BI PLATFORM 4.0 SP08 ENTER .NET SDK RUNTIME WINDOWS

These files would be installed on the CLIENT machine so that they can communicate with the SERVER

According to CMC – Settings - Properties, our server product version is 14.0.3
[Build Date: 2012/06/11:18:38:06, Build Number: 738]
My understanding is that this version maps to BI 4.0 SP4.

I downloaded and installed 51043418_1
[SBOP BI PLAT .NET SDK RUNTIME 4.0 SP04 (w/FP03) WIN(32/64B) Version 6].

The installation ran successfully.

I am still unable to connect to the server using ENTERPRISE. Same behavior as before I installed the SDK Runtime.

I appreciate any recommendations, etc.

RE: Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

Hmmm. . .

Have you installed the Client Tools as Dell had suggested?
I haven't encountered this problem before, but I always have the Client Tools installed (as well as the .NET SDK Runtime for BI4)

Sorry I'm not more helpful.

Good luck.

RE: Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

We had a major breakthrough with this today.

One of my co-workers successfully connected to the Crystal Server and saved a report using Save-As-Enterprise from Crystal Rpts 2011 [Developer] on a PC that does NOT have Harvest software change manager [CA SCM Workbench Release 12.0.2] installed on it.

Our current assumption is either a DLL or some sort of Port issue. That's all of the information that I have at this time, but will provide an update if/when I found out anything more.

RE: Save As [Enterprise] to BOE server results in Internal error: an unknown exception has occurred

We figured this out.

The Enterprise connectivity problem between Crystal Reports 2011 [Crystal Developer] and the Crystal Server [BusinessObjects Enterprise BOE 4.0 SP04] was being caused by an installation of CA SCM Workbench 12.0.2 [aka Harvest Workbench] on our machines. There were DLL conflicts. The problem got resolved when we upgraded CA SCM Workbench to version 12.5.
