slow opening excel files on 2008r2 server share

I have a strange problem and can't seem to find any references to it. I am in the process of moving some user home folders from a windows 2003 server to a new server running 2008r2. Users are having serious "delays" trying to open excel worksheets that are on the 2008r2 server. I can put copies of the same excel worksheets on shares on the 2003 server and the 2008r2 server and only the 2008r2 server shares experience the problem. Can anybody point me to anything that would explain this kind of problem? The sharing and security settings are set properly on both servers. Identical copies of the excel worksheets are used for testing.. the problem can be duplicated using multiple workstations running office 2007 or office 2010 so it is not a user or workstation problem. Everything points to the only point of failure being the 2008r2 server so far.

i am at a loss at this point to explain what is happening.

I was finally able to fix the problem by disabling SMB2 on the server hosting the share.

Added a REG_DWORD named Smb2 and set it to 0 (disabled).
HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\lanmanserver\parameters\

I don't remember where i finally found the fix, but I tried a crap load of stuff that didnt work before this finally fixed my problem.
